Russia yesterday threatened to 'crush' anyone who dared to defy it, after moving missile launchers within range of Georgia's capital.
The provocative move throws down the gauntlet to Nato leaders meeting today in emergency session on the new Cold War crisis.
U.S. intelligence said the Kremlin had moved several SS-21 missile launchers into the rebel enclave of South Ossetia, putting them in range of Tbilisi.
The move allows Russia to pull out of Georgia proper as it has promised but punish Tbilisi at any moment at the push of a button.
Russian president Dmitry Medvedev vowed a 'crushing response' if Georgia or anyone else dares to defy Moscow's will in the tinderbox Caucasus region. ...
Mr Medvedev was at his most hawkish since the conflict erupted, telling war veterans: 'If someone thinks they can kill our citizens, kill soldiers and officers fulfilling the role of peacekeepers, we will never allow this.
'Anyone who tries to do this will receive a shattering blow.'
His warning followed Russian threats to unleash nuclear weapons on Poland in a future conflict because Warsaw agreed to installations linked to America's defence shield.
Moscow has also indicated that it will arm its Baltic fleet with nuclear weapons.
Awarding medals to servicemen involved in the conflict in Georgia, Mr Medvedev insisted that Russia has always been 'a peace-loving nation'.
He added: 'The Russian, Soviet state has never started a war. But even the most peace-loving state should have an effective army.'

What I think? OK.
I think that Saakashvilli got tired of the talks which continued 15 years from 1992-3 till now and decided to solve his territorial conflicts by one decisive blow.
Why he decide to act today? Because of he looks for NATO membership but NATO didn’t accept countries with territorial conflicts. But he needed to get the NATO partnership in THIS year till George Bush still the president. SO he must to solve all his territorial conficts to the end of this year or he must forfeit the disptuted territory for NATo partnership or he must forfeit NATO. So that is why he attacked today.

Looks like this thread was going strong yesterday with positive ,intelligent posts until the smell of red meat attracted the wolves and other predatory apologists. When will these people come to terms with the moral reality that violence itself is morally neutral....it is the intent and reason for it that gives it it's moral dimension. Russia is morally wrong because by it's own admission it is killing innocent people to "punish" , not in self defense. The breakaway provinces are legally Georgia and no number of Russian Passport holders in there gives Russia the MORAL RIGHT to do this. The have the power but not the right. And that is the definition of BARBARIAN.
One more thing, it isn't our fault that the Russian people missed the Renaissance because they were under the boot of the Tartars. They have the example of America and the West to model themselves on. If they refuse to change their behavior and adopt civilized politics and international behavior then they will be destroyed in a defensive war someday. If they don't destroy themselves first with abortion and booze.

This war started when Geogians shelled Tshinval on 08.08.2008. Before this date there were only sporadical exchange of fire (snipers, etc) between Ossetian paramilitary and Georgians troops.

Now, tell us what was going on in S. Ossetia, a part of sovereign Georgia, prior to 8/8/08? ...specifically, what was Russia doing with regard to S. Ossetia?
Russia gave Ossetians Russian passports, and I personally do not think this was the best idea in the world.
But I can tell you what Russia did not do:
1. Did not install pro-Russian gov. (In contrast to US in Georgia during “Rose revolution”)
2. Did not include Ossetian president of Kremlin pay roll (Saakashvili is on US Dep payroll)
3. Did not kill political opponents (Georgian premier Jvania was murdered by Saakashvili)
4. Did not supply Ossetia with heave weapons (US supplied Georgia with tons of modern weapons starting from M-16 to helicopters)
5. Did not send military advisors to train Ossetian militia (US send ~ 200 military instructors to Georgia)
In contrast to the U.S. during "rose Revolution"? You mean George Soros' operation in Georgia? He was selling out both Georgia and So Ossetia under the Chimera of his "Open Society" operation.

by the way - when Geogia was leaving USSR in 1991 using the independence law issued by Gorbachev it should have asked Georgian republics (Abkhazia, Ossetia and Adjaria) about their will (do they agree to leave or want to stay with Russia). So, formally S. Ossetia is NOT a part of Geogia both de-facto and de-jure.
Aha! You are twisting the cube. So. Ossetia is "not a part" of Georgia because it wishes to be a part of Russia. But now, when Georgia Government helps the US in Iraq/Afghanistan, So. Ossetia is considered NOW, for argumentation purposes "Georgia"?

Be specific. Military instructors were sent to So. Ossetia and/or to Georgia? Which is it?
