Eric Cantor, 45, would be a dramatic choice for Mr McCain, who is running almost level with Barack Obama in national polls but whose aides believe he needs to shake-up the White House race if he is to prevail in November's general election.
Aides to Mr McCain revealed that Mr Cantor, the only Jewish Republican in the House of Representatives, had been asked to submit documents as part of a rigorous vetting process to hunt out any closet skeletons.
He joins a shortlist believed to include Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor and Mr McCain's bitter rival during the Republican primaries, Tim Pawlenty, Minnesota governor, and Rob Portman, a former Ohio congressman and budget director in the Bush administration.
Of the four, Mr Cantor would be by far the most exiting - though potentially risky - choice. A prodigious fundraiser with a young, photogenic family, support from evangelical Christians and strong backing from hard-line conservatives, he would shore up many of Mr McCain's weaknesses.

So?
As long as he is an effective running mate who supports what we stand for with conviction as a conservative minded politician, why bring his religion into it?
McLame needs a black, female, conservative.
But he is too stupid to know that, I’m pretty convinced about that.
cant have Mitt. He’s the next Senator from Massachussetts (now to topple Dorgan, Dodd, Leahy, and Schumer)
Cant be the real up and comers from Louisiana and South Carolina...gotta save them from being marked with the failure that will be the presidency for the next four years (for either side). so...pawlenty or the gal from Alaska, says I.
Since Rice isn't conservative, who could be considered realistically?
He sounds like a very nice man, but I don’t think he’s right for McCain’s VP choice. He needs someone with name recognition who can bring something to the party. He should pick someone who has been a governor, and not a Congressman. Unfortunately, only the voters in their districts know who they are. I had never heard of this man until yesterday when it was posted on FR.
You are right, however if this pick could draw even more Jewish voters away from their Democrap addiction, it could spell doom for Obama in key swing states.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
This pick would help with conservatives and give McCain help in Virginia but Jewish voters are as stuck on the Democrat plantation as blacks. Doubt any large Jewish defections.
So?
It's not something that Barack Hussein Obama would consider, is it?
(I still think this is all psyops and McCain knew who he was going to pick weeks ago. If he gets Obama to pick Dilbert's pointy-haired boss (Kaine), then mission accomplished!)
Is there one of those?
Besides who the hell could he put on the ticket. Condi the Incompetant? Janice Rogers Brown (year, a state judge on the ticket).
I have no idea who Eric Cantor is, I know somewhat who Mitt Romney is, and I can say the same for many other possibles considered by McCain.
Isn't it best to await John McCain's choice (since after all it is his choice) as who he deems to be the chosen one?
Then if needed, nail the "sucker" to the wall for it or "praise" him for his choice!
Who cares what his running mate's religion is?
It could be much worse than Jewish and he/she could be brainless to boot!
Soon we will know what his choice is.
The "buck" stops with John McCain after all.
I think Cantor would be great, but it's easier to imagine Lieberman pulling moderate Jewish votes away from Dubya than it is to imagine Cantor pulling insanely deranged leftwing Jewish votes away from Obama. Is there any other kind of Jewish voter leaning in favor of Obama? Heck no.
Excellent Choice for Virginia and the Jewish vote for BHO seems tenuous.
Obama is already doing terribly among Jews, for a Democrat. Whereas any other Dem usually gets at least 80%, Obama would probably be lucky to grab 60% at best. McCain will win a lot of Jewish votes who would have gone to Hillary. GOP candidates drawing unusual high numbers of Jewish votes aren’t without precedent. Both Ike and Reagan won 40-50 %, Bush 2004 36% (Bush 2000 10% or even less... but remember Lieberman was Gore’s running mate).
You sure you're not thinking of Al Jolson (a good conservative Republican who wrote the Warren G. Harding campaign's theme song, btw!)?
IF you had said “Fred” I would have agreed.
Eric Cantor is a fourth-term congressman representing the Seventh District of Virginia. He recently won re-election to Congress in November 2006.
In December 2002 Eric was selected to serve as Chief Deputy Majority Whip, the highest appointed position in the House Representatives.
As Chief Deputy Whip, Eric has a seat at the House Republican Leadership table.
Eric holds a seat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, which has direct jurisdiction over taxes, trade, Social Security, Medicare, prescription drugs for seniors, health care and welfare reform.
He also serves as Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare.
The task force is composed of Members of Congress who study the threat of international terrorism on the United States and develop policy proposals and legislative recommendations regarding the fight against terrorism.
Eric Cantor is a lifelong resident of the Richmond area. He got his start in politics as a student at George Washington University by interning for Congressman Tom Bliley in Blileys Washington office and serving as a driver on Blileys first re-election campaign.
Eric received his law degree from The College of William and Mary and his Masters degree from Columbia University in New York.
While in New York, Eric met his wife Diana and brought her back to Virginia where they are currently raising three children, Evan, Jenna and Michael, who attend Henrico County Public Schools.
