Prince Charles has been driving while using alcohol - to run his car.

In his latest effort to help the environment, the prince has converted his 38-year-old Aston Martin to run on fuel made from surplus English wine.

The move, part of a drive to reduce his carbon footprint, emerged in an annual review of the Prince's activities. It shows he has already hit his target of cutting carbon emissions by 12.5 per cent by 2012, in line with the Government's Kyoto target. Prince Charles Aston martin

Drink and drive: Prince Charles has converted his 38-year-old Aston Martin to run on bio-ethanol made from English wine

Aides said this was partly due to the pattern of Royal trips set by the Foreign Office. He has now doubled the target to a 25 per cent fall in emissions by 2018.

Converting the Aston Martin played a small but symbolic role. The Prince's chief aide Sir Michael Peat said: 'Charles only traveled two or three hundred miles a year in the Aston but he wanted it to be environmentally friendly. It just happened that our bioethanol supplier makes the fuel from surplus English wine.'

Well, you've got to do something with English wine - you can't drink that plonk.

Will he get a ticket like the people who get tickets for using restaurant grease in their diesels?

For not paying tax.

(seriously)

I once had a Madeline Angevine wine from England. It would have been better of in my gas tank. Yeech.

I always heard the reason the English did not manufacture television sets was they could not figure out how to make them leak oil.

Jersey taxes folks who use recycled restaurant oil, and I figured all other states would do the same.

...isn’t he still releasing CO2?

Are the English going to bill him for all the lost tax revenue?

At current prices, isn’t wine cheaper than oil?

Why do the English drink warm beer?

They have Lucas refrigerators.

I’ve actually had some decent UK wine from Denbies in Surrey. It was far better than I expected. Not great but certainly drinkable.

Shame. Such a gorgeous car.

If I were worth a few million dollars, the Aston Martin Vanquish would be my car of choice.

Seriously, people in England get fined for using restaurant grease as a fuel? And the problem is that they didn’t pay tax? Sounds like a bureaucratic rule that needs changing.

What about the incentive? They go to the trouble of collecting old oil and grease, and then they have to filter and do some refining of the product, I think, in order to use it as a fuel. For their trouble, they get in trouble for not paying fuel taxes. This is unbelievable to me. The perverse incentive is that if they have to pay tax anyway, they may as well not do their homemade conservation.

Did I say mental?
