I am going to hazard a guess that the ruling by the SCOTUS played a part in this!(probably not really but it sounds good doesn’t it?) I never did know why they charged this guy, I would have given him more ammo and told him to keep watch on the rest of the neighborhood, made him an honorary police officer. It will be interesting to see what happens out in the neighborhood now that the announcement has been made. I saw a bunch of protestors on tv stating they were on standby to march protest if the GJ didn’t indict. The police had indicated a beefed up detail just in case and I think even Quanell X was involved.

In Texas, the charging decision in felony cases is made by a jury (grand jury), and not by the prosecutor. The theory is that it lessens the political considerations. In a case like this, it’s a win-win, because it takes the heat off the prosecutor, who would be criticized regardless of what he/she decided.
