You beat me to it. Ping for a neighbor being a neighbor. I’d like to shake that man’s hand and tell him that he is a hero for what he’s been through. Hopefully the thugs’ families won’t sue him in civil court.

Jury to Quannell X: Go pound sand.

I was pretty sure this was what was going to happen, contrary to the opinions of non-Texan FReepers.

I am going to hazard a guess that the ruling by the SCOTUS played a part in this!(probably not really but it sounds good doesn’t it?) I never did know why they charged this guy, I would have given him more ammo and told him to keep watch on the rest of the neighborhood, made him an honorary police officer. I guess that is why I am not in charge of anything in this state:)

It will be interesting to see what happens out in the neighborhood now that the announcement has been made. I saw a bunch of protestors on tv stating they were on standby to march protest if the GJ didn’t indict. The police had indicated a beefed up detail just in case and I think even Quanell X was involved.

Obviously the jury was stacked with rich, white, SUV-driving, racist right-winger Republican extremist gun-nuts employed by big-gun. /sarcasm

Great news! Does this put the issue to rest?

In Texas, the charging decision in felony cases is made by a jury (grand jury), and not by the prosecutor. The theory is that it lessens the political considerations. In a case like this, it’s a win-win, because it takes the heat off the prosecutor, who would be criticized regardless of what he/she decided.

Aside from the shooting itself, the national debate revolved around the fact that Ortiz and Torres were illegal immigrants from Colombia. Torres had been sent to prison for dealing cocaine and was deported in 1999.

This was the LAST paragraph in the story.
