Welcome to Free Republic. I am a US citizen but living in an Asian country to the south of you. You asked us not to stereotype you, in other words believing what the media outlets tell us about China and its people. We don’t. Let me assure that more people who post at Free Republic hate the established news media and never believe anything they say about anything. We would rather find out for ourselves by communicating with first-hand witnesses.

Having said that, please do not put all Americans in the same category either. We don’t allow ourselves license and deny it to others. Righteousness and goodness are the same for everybody and sin is sin no matter who commits the acts. Americans differ from region to region just as Chinese differ from province to province.

We are glad that you are posting on Free Republic. We welcome you. You have surprised us. We have been led to expect, especially as recent interaction with the Olympic Torch guards has demonstrated, that the Chinese government limits and controls communication from the Chinese people. I am glad to see that freedom has come to you.

We think that it is indeed something to have someone from China communicating with us. Thank you for taking the trouble.

You must understand though, that we have been hurt. Other people have come to Free Republic and pretended one thing and another. We have believed them and later found they lied to us. Please understand that some of us are cautious and need time to get to know you.

Welcome to FreeRepublic.com

We are all types of people, with a similar mind. One of the things we have learned is that we must "thicken our skin". That means that we must not pay heed to those who speak bad or harmfully. Their words are to be heeded as the rain on a duck's back. It falls to the ground and wastes it's purpose.

Americans are nationalistic, as is China. But, we are all people of this planet, and have the same end goal. We wish to live a comfortable life, surrounded by family and friends, with a rood over our head. We work hard to provide nice things for them, and ourselves.

We all share a common goal, tomorrow! Let us join our voices and minds to bring the world together, regardless of nations. We are it's people!

We pray for China and it's families. It is a sad time for us all.

"Be cautious"? With all due respect, SW6906, you're the one I'm feeling uneasy about right now.

"DITHF" So they're all fake Germans now, eh? For crying out loud, what in the world happened to you personally when the fake German was exposed as a fake German? Did you lose your computer? Did you lose your ability to write? Did the fake German steal your thoughts, plagiarize, do anything to hurt you or any of your loved ones? I sure hope you didn't send him a key to your house. That would be absurd, but hey, this whole paranoia your espousing is straight out of the theater of absurd.

Do you believe that any troll would suddenly be able to control thought or change anything about our freedom here?

There is a great deal lost when you close yourself off to learning something new from someone who very well might be who he/she says they are.

If you are in fact an American, have you ever considered how close-minded and repressive you sound worrying about someone writing on the Internet?

Besides, this is about a catastrophe in China where I am praying for all in China who were affected by this earthquake.

Ya wanna try and take away my right to feel compassion, and sadness over their loss? Ya gonna tell me I have no right to pray for those lost in this devastating catastrophe?

Get real.

So let me be grateful that I have suffered no intolerable wrong,no terrible woe of flesh or spirit, such as my fathers(grandfathers). Is it not much to have accomplished so large a part of the mortal journey with so much ease?

In knowing that the simple things in life are the most precious, you show great wisdom.

In knowing that our differences can make us stronger, you show great compassion.

In knowing that our media can (and does) shape our opinions, you show great intelligence.

Thank you for your post, and Welcome to FR!

To people who thought I were a spy

I am sorry if you feel frightened.
Sometimes we have debate about political issues, but we agree to disagree...I think we have too much difference and it won’t be easy for us to understand each other. China changes so quickly and I am sorry but many Americans still live in the past, of course, and because the American government used to so scared about the communism, the mass media have described China as a monster... we do have problems, but we are improving...for example, we can file a law suit against the government or the department irresponsible even in the central government, you can find the related news in Chinese, and the lawsuit is reported in different newspapers and the chances of winning is become bigger and bigger...

and it’s not easy for you guys to change your mind if you have not experienced the reality in China. Personally, I was so surprised about the ignorance of some of my foreign friends, they know so little about the real Chinese history (maybe it’s too long a history, maybe they just don’t care) , and what they say is all about human rights, about liberty, freedom that many of us are not so interested(actually those information are availabe on the internet like wiki, it’s said to be neutral) into this kind of topics since most of us are quite satisfied with the current situation.

We don’t have to prove anything, we have our advantages and disadvantages. Nobody’s superior. We should be proud of ourselves, proud of our own country, although we have our different problems to solve. The only thing is that we should respect others. Nobody likes those who don’t respect others.

You know what that makes me think? That makes me think that you're full of baloney. You seem to be so proud of those pretty little phrases that, subconsciously, you couldn't bring yourself to pervert them.

I guess it might not have occurred to you that "Storms always give way to the sun.Winter always thaws into springtime" MIGHT be a philosophy that chinaboy has used for several years in order to console himself since the death of his father. Repetition does breed clarity.

The inexorable march of time can heal (or at least diminish) even the most heartfelt pain.

You know what your post makes me think?

That grellis is a myopic twit.

(chinaboy - I posted this too you as well because it is considered proper form at FReerepublic to let someone know that you are talking about them.)

A quick reply. Yes, americans can post any political opinion we want without any fear of punishment by the government. That is the quick answer. However, a private enterprise, one owned by an individual, may have restrictions of their own. That isn’t a government thing at all and no one will get in trouble with the law. For example, if I wrote here that the president previous to the current one was a fine example of a human being, the US government wouldn’t shut me down. But I might get banned from FR.

Note to moderators: I said IF and I couldn’t bring myself to use that fool’s name.

It is late at my location (I am not in the US) and I must get to bed.

No, we have no Internet or political restrictions.

Free speech means that we have the freedom to say what we like as well as listening to whatever other people have to say.

Sad that so many American take that freedom for granted.

Few here think that the recent Chinese posters are probably agents of the Chinese state, although it would hardly be surprising if one or more actually were. All of us humans are under the same sky. As the brave Russian Solzhenitsyn wrote:

“If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.”

Thanks for posting.
