Turkey in radical revision of Islamic texts By Robert Piggott Religious affairs correspondent, BBC News
Turkey is preparing to publish a document that represents a revolutionary reinterpretation of Islam - and a controversial and radical modernisation of the religion.
The country's powerful Department of Religious Affairs has commissioned a team of theologians at Ankara University to carry out a fundamental revision of the Hadith, the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran.
It says that a significant number of the sayings were never uttered by Muhammad, and even some that were need now to be reinterpreted.
Some messages ban women from travelling without their husband's permission... But this isn't a religious ban. It came about because it simply wasn't safe for a woman to travel alone Prof Mehmet Gormez, Hadith expert, Department of Religious Affairs
Prof Mehmet Gormez, a senior official in the Department of Religious Affairs and an expert on the Hadith, gives a telling example.
"There are some messages that ban women from travelling for three days or more without their husband's permission and they are genuine.
"But this isn't a religious ban. It came about because in the Prophet's time it simply wasn't safe for a woman to travel alone like that. But as time has passed, people have made permanent what was only supposed to be a temporary ban for safety reasons."
Prof Gormez points out that in another speech, the Prophet said "he longed for the day when a woman might travel long distances alone".
So, he argues, it is clear what the Prophet's goal was.
Yet, until now, the ban has remained in the text, and helps to restrict the free movement of some Muslim women to this day.

I wonder how they’ll attempt to “reform” the commandment to conduct war until the whole world is subjugated or converted.
Turkey - leading the Muslim world into the 12th century.

Be fair. If as the article says, this is an Islamic Reformation, they are leading the Muslim world into the 16th century!
WOW.... This ought to be fun to watch.....
This is somewhat encouraging.
I think they understand that they won't have to lift a finger on that front; the Dhimmicrats have made it clear that they're more than happy to bend over and take it up the tailpipe from the Mohammedans in the name of "cultural sensitivity" and "political correctness."
You should read the later chapters of Joel Rosenberg's "Epicenter". Talks about conversions of Muslims to Christianity.
They have also taken an even bolder step - rejecting a long-established rule of Muslim scholars that later (and often more conservative) texts override earlier ones.

That’s big. I hope this succeeds and is as hopeful as it sounds.
What does our resident Islamist, JasonC, think of this?
I hope I am not misintrepreting your history lesson as somehow implying that a couple of decades worth of Muslims blowing each other away as being a bad thing...
Nail those theses to the door of the mosque, Muslim Luther!
This is the best news I’ve heard in ages.
The Islamic Reformation.
Don’t let the significance of this go unnoticed ... PING!
Turkey WAS the islamic world until oil was raised in Saudi after WW II.
Mohammed Seminar?
The Islamic equivalent to the Jesus Seminar. The sound similar.
Well, I do see pluses and minuses. One of the major european wars, the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) really caused a lot of mayhem to people on the sidelines who had no dog in the fight. Along those lines, I can see oil going to $200 a barrel if Islam really started eating itself.
This may create a war within Islam.
It may create a path for Muslims in secular democracies, hopefully Iraq and Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan to truly marginalize the terrorist jihadists.
The “Jesus” Film has been finding its way into
the middle east with eternal results. Continue
to pray for the hearts and minds of these lost
people. The last one to say yes to Jesus could
be a (former) Muslim.
The last “yes”! Then the Rapture. Hallelujah!

To be quite candid, I would rather see the Islamic countries fighting each other, or the fanatical Islamists fighting the Islamic countries than carrying the war to the USA.
The 30 Years War was the grand climactic bash that finished off a century of religious warfare in Western Europe. Granted, the Brits still had to go through a civil war and the Cromwell experience, but once these disagreements were settled, the way was clear for the Enlightenment.
It may take a while for all this to play out, but I still see it as a net positive.
