Nomenclatures

Early on, self loading rifles and pistols were called “automatics”

and most people understood they reloaded automatically, but were not machine guns

Now people are so ignorant that they figure “automatic” is a machine gun that can empty itself with one trigger pull...

I think the Brits in their version of English still use “automatic” in the sense in which we use “’semi’-automatic”. (A good example is Ian Hogg’s book.)

This is stamped 22 Automatic and it uses ONLY 22 automatic ammunition!

Its a Winchester model 1903 and the first 22 cal self loading rifle made.

Most 22 cal rifles in that day used black powder and this used the new smokeless powder.

It uses a slightly different size of 22 ammunition.

But you are correct, in function it is semi auto.
