I can’t get the WSVN to load for me.
We just had a flicker in our power at work ... God, I hope it doesn’t happen here too.

Widespread Power Outages Across Southern Florida
Tuesday, February 26, 2008
MIAMI Widespread power outages are being reported around southern Florida, including parts of Miami.
Carl Fowler of Broward Emergency Managment Administration told FOX News that Florida Power and Light is reporting a transmission source problem as the cause of the outages that are affecting areas statewide.
They are not sure where the location of the problem originates.
Some areas are in blackout while others are experiencing surges or flickers.
Earlier, authorities said that five Turkey Point reactors unexpectedly went down and two are back on line.
Homeland Security officials are monitoring the situation, but told FOX News there is no indication the outage is linked to terrorism.
Frank Reddish, Miami-Dade County’s emergency management coordinator, said the outages appear to be concentrated in the southeast portion of the state, including Miami. The outages began shortly after 1 p.m. EST.
Jaime Hernandez, a spokesman for Miami-Dade County Department of Emergency Management, said the county is partially activating its emergency operations center. He said no injuries have been reported so far.
Police officers on live television are seen directing traffic at intersections in downtown Miami. Many stop lights are out and some stores have closed because they are without power.
By 2 p.m., most of northern downtown Miami appeared to be back to normal operation, including a campus of Miami-Dade Community College and numerous stores and businesses. Traffic lights were out for a short time but appeared to be back in regular operation.
The U.S. courthouse complex, which includes a federal prison, experienced only a brief outage and is equipped with backup generators to keep the power flowing, officials said.
An official at the Miami International Airport says the facility is working on a generator backup but that no airline delays were reported.
WSVN is reporting 4.4 million are wihtout are without power.
Oh, crap ... they just told us we’re running on our generator.
They were showing live coverage from WSVN that I can’t get to load, the helicopter reporter said that they flew over the
Turkey Point Power Plant 2 days ago and noticed odd smoke
coming from one of the buildings there. He said that some
imigrants had come to shore there also.
Obviously this is all here say since I can’t get that page
to load and was listening to the chopper pilot.
Our prayers are with you. Stay with us as long as you can
and keep us posted.
They did say they shut down one or two of the Turkey Point Reactors as a security precaution and it caused the whole
grid to go down. They did not specify why they shut them
down or what the problem was.
Not for security but for safety reasons. Still not sure what
that means.
MIAMI (AP) Floridas largest electric company shut down a nuclear reactor south of Miami for mechanical reasons Tuesday, causing sporadic power outages covering large portions of the state that could last well into the night. More than 3 million people are affected, the state says.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said that the two Florida Power & Light nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point power point 30 miles south of Miami automatically shut down. Two other power plants farther north, the Crystal River reactor and St. Lucie twin reactors, in the state continued to operate, although officials at those two facilities noticed the grid disturbance.
It is very suspicious especially after the WSVN chopper
reporter said he flew over the Turkey Point Reactor
2 days ago and noticed suspicious smoke from one of the
buildings.
It might be helpful, since you are a reporter yourself, to
contact WSVN and find out exactly what the chopper pilot actually saw. I have no idea what his name is.
Ping to developing important thread:
My school just made an announcement on the public address: All after school activities (including meetings and parent conferences) are cancelled. All students AND staff are to exit the building and go directly home. Even night school! That never happens. Something weird is going on. A few hours ago, the school made another announcement to keep all students out of the hallways. They say that only when there has been an “incident” that doesn’t rate a “code red” alert. Sometimes orders like this come from downtown.
My students are on their cell phones, now. One is reporting similar problems in New York City from relatives that are contacting family here in Miami. Widen the focus. Check other cities. Somebody link this post over to the Threat Matrix. I have to calm my students.

Rumor ALERT! My wife’s school is out and they’re holding class outside under shade trees. My wife has old friends of her family high up in FP&L.
“Scuttlebutt” (from some pretty informed sources) has it that something has happened at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant and that “something” is somehow connected to the guy who tried to flee police from Miami International airport yesterday, who was found to have five passports on him after he jumped from the upper deck to the lower and busted his arm and some ribs. Pretty sure he’s a muzzie.
The spin machine is running at full speed on local tv and says that a huge transformer near the Turkey Point plant was knocked out by a storm. That smells to me. Local transformers in neighborhoods are certainly vulnerable to things like that. It has been windy, but nothing near strong enough to hurt something like that. Near a nuke plant? Big enough to route power to other parts of the state? Nooooooo way, IMHO. Something is going on here.
Threat Matrix! Get cracking on this one. Beat the bushes (so to speak) and see if maybe we’ve been HIT. I’m still stuck in my classroom without any tv service. I’m cutoff and isolated. By all appearances, traffic lights are out all over the county. I have to go to the VA and then home this afternoon. It’s gonna be a dangerous nightmare to travel. Got no choice.

I’m not a reporter (I’m an editor), and fortunately I’m in Sarasota, away from the east-coast madness. Still, more outages are being reported here. It’s having a domino effect.
So- while some areas- such as Melbourne and parts of Orlando and Brevard County- are getting power restored..more places are losing it??
I’m up in Seminole County- lights on here all day. But we use Progress Energy- who may get their power from a different provider.

Thank you drymans wife for all the updates — apparently their was a “substation failure” according to the news I am listening to that caused the power outage.
Updates appreciated.
