With Thompson out, Tom McClintock leans to Ron Paul
Los Angeles Times ^ | Jan 25, 2008 | Dan Morain

With Fred Thompson out of the presidential race, who's a self-respecting conservative to go for? Could it be, maybe, perhaps, a certain Republican-libertarian from Texas?

That's one question perplexing California state Sen. Tom McClintock, possibly the second-most-famous California Republican currently in office after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

McClintock created a stir two months when he endorsed Thompson’s presidential candidacy. Having run for governor, lieutenant governor and state controller, McClintock has shown that while he has not won a statewide contest, he can win GOP primaries, which conservatives tend to dominate. So heading into the Feb. 5 primary, McClintock’s endorsement is seen as important in California.

Ron Paul’s newsletter problems would have put him out of the race if he wasn’t such a marginal figure. Ron Paul would never hold up to close scrutiny. Does anyone on this forum really believe that if that happened to one of the major candidates it would not have been page one news.

and the tagline behind you speaks loudly of your views.

Can't argue with that. Flip Romney's own double-dealing MO will be his undoing.

My brain tells me that Romney is the next best choice since McCain ain’t a conservative. But my heart tells me that I like at least part of Paul’s agenda.

Agreed. My heart and brain tells me the same two things. Then there's a third factor -- my gut. Many of my best life's lessons have been that while my brain is an excellent guide, the rare times (and they have been rare) that my gut has warned me that my heart is blind to something and that my brain is missing something, it's turned out the ol' gut was the wiser guide.

My gut has screamed from the very beginning, long before Thompson was on or off the Primary scene, that Romney is a superb bull slinger and joy-talker who is all the more dangerous because he's sincere and thinks he's got God on his side and therefore can do no wrong.

My gut recoiled from the start at Romney; hence applying lessons learned, I've used my brain to investigate more carefully Romney's record. I've concluded that my good ol' dependable gut is probably right again, as it has always been right in the past and I ignore it at my peril. The only other candidate who comes close in the gut-rejection arena is Huckabee.

Actually, in this case, I would bet McClintock goes to Paul. I was looking through his blog and he has two references, in one he was listing the possible candidates in may and mentioned Paul, Tancredo, Hunter, and Thompson, then a few months ago he was praising Paul’s comments on the war.

Golly by that logic you can say that the party is not going to vote for a conservative candidate for POTUS because Thompson never placed higher than 3rd!

Lots of factors, including media portrayal factor into how many votes a candidate gets.

McClintock. The guy who SHOULD have been governor. At least, would have been if it wasn't for the Party Reptiles touting RINO Ahnold's "electability".

Incidentally, I have a feeling it is the same RINO pushers trying to get us to swallow Rudy McRomney right now and for the same reasons that will more than likely generate the SAME EXACT CONSEQUENCES.

People need to wake up to a few things...

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Sensible militarism in defense of US territory and US citizens and their property, yes.

...and 'sensible militarism' does not include the type of abrupt withdrawal that most in the Paul camp seem to espouse. Sorry, but until Paul "gets this", he's simply not an option.

You are on the Wrong website. You should try the Daily Kos.

That anti-american crap is never going to sell here, even if you dress it up as old-school isolationism.

Unless it was Hillary or another democrat, then it would be buried or written off as a misunderstanding (see her recent 'spade' comment about Obama.)

Well it looks to me like Tom McClintock is gettin about ready to throw the rest of his once good credibility into the kook box that he hasn't already trown into the shamful tribal gaming box!!!

Based on your racist post about Indians earlier today, I'll have to take that with a grain of salt.
