Generation Next moves beyond abortions
The Washington Times ^ | 1-21-2008 | Daniel Allott

With little media fanfare, Hollywood is creating a new genre of films marketed to the prolific ticket buyers who make up its target demographic, teens and young adults. Though not known as a conservative bastion, the movie industry has always been quick to pick up trends that turn a profit. And among America's young people, pro-life is in.

Consider the recent sleeper hit "Juno," the story of a precocious 16-year-old who becomes pregnant following a tryst with her best friend. Juno initially contemplates abortion but hesitates after talking with a pro-life counselor. Juno ultimately decides for life, giving her child to a young couple unable to conceive.

As it climbs the box office charts (currently ranking second in box office revenues and first on Yahoo's popularity index), and having recently garnered three Golden Globe nominations, Juno is demonstrating that the pro-life message resonates with audiences and critics alike.

But Juno is just one of many recent films—including "August Rush," "Knocked Up," "Bella" and "Waitress" — with unmistakable pro-child messages. A series of recent polls illuminates why films like "Juno" are a hit with America's youth.

The pro-child attitudes of this generation are very apparent to me in my real estate dealings. Lotsa 4 child families (and beyond) being planned.

Good for them.

My daughter is 26 and VERY well educated (PhD in a heavy science field). She and her husband are expecting. Among their peers, there is a trend to children early in the MARRIAGE! Interesting generation of young people coming along.

For most people, having a child is a life changing experience—it is when many REALLY cross the threshold into being an adult. Its when you realize its not all just about YOU. In a sense, some of your dreams do die, but it also brings a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment most childless will never know. Too many people consider children to be a nusiance/distraction and try to fill the void in their lives by chasing $$ and stuff. I lost count of the number of high achievers I know who have opted out of the gene pool to focus on their careers. Many of those wake up in their late 40s & older to find out that they missed out on an essential part of life that all the restaurant meals, vactions, cars & mini-mansions can’t replace. In the end, children are your ticket to immortality more than any other thing you accomplish. Just my 2 cents.

“America’s young people, pro-life is in.”

This is true to a point. My oldest (18 yo) has stated that while kids that age are still hacing sex, they are being a lot smarter and using protection than previous generations.

The late boomers/early X'ers learned a hard lesson. They were taught that they could have it all only to discover when they tried to have children in their mid to late 30s that they were duped.

The younger generation have seen their older sisters and aunts struggle with fertility and have taken heed.

Isn’t it great to see movies about 16-year-olds and unmarried women getting drunk and getting knocked up? That’s really something to cheer for.

Bingo. Some of these cultural conservatives are delusional if they think films such as those mentioned indicate a level of health and morality in this country’s youth. Talk about grasping at straws.

They watched a lot of older folks making mistakes. They saw selfish, empty behavior of some of YOUR peers and later heard their lamentations of regret.

Yeah! Since that sort of thing NEVER happens why should anyone make a movie dealing with the morality of it? /S

The new generation is great. I went back school a few years ago at age 27 to finish an engineering degree and got to interact with them and was impressed. The amazing thing about America is its ability to propagate itself through the generations. These kids are different from preceding generations (as they all are) but they’re 100% American.
