Huckabee asks if Mormons believe Jesus, devil are brothers
AP ^ | December 12, 2007

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it. His rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a member of the Mormon church, which is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.

A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.

"We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all," said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. "That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for."

Romney did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this month in Iowa, Huckabee wouldn't say whether he thought Mormonism — rival Romney's religion — was a cult.

"I'm just not going to go off into evaluating other people's doctrines and faiths. I think that is absolutely not a role for a president," the former Arkansas governor said.

It’s not propaganda, it is biblical doctrine. Num. 16: 22 God of the spirits of all flesh. Deut. 14: 1 Ye are the children of the Lord your God. Mal. 2: 10 Have we not all one father. Acts 17: 29 we are the offspring of God. Rom. 8: 16 Spirit itself beareth witness . . . we are the children of God. Eph. 4: 6 One God and Father of all. Heb. 12: 9 ..be in subjection unto the Father of spirits.

Well, I cited Acts 17:29 to you before you returned the favor. Heb. 12 shows that it was written to those who have Jesus as the author & finisher of their faith (Heb. 12:2). Not all have such faith.

Eph. 4 is written for those who are part of the "one body of Christ." (I don't think Muslims who remain Muslims all of their life would qualify for that, do you?)

You cite Rom 8:16 but ignore the context of 8:15 ("but ye have received the spirit of ADOPTION"). The Bible talks a few times about the "adopted" children of God. If we were all automatically children, we wouldn't need to be adopted now would we?

Deut. 14:1...keep reading... v. 2 says "For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God..." First of all, were all the people on the planet at that time "holy?" ("Holy" BTW, doesn't always mean "pure"--it also means to be set apart for a sacred purpose...that describes the Israelites)

Num. 16:22 reiterates what the Bible says in other passages...He created all people. And that's also what Mal.2:10 does: "Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us?" We all have one creative origin.

But the majority of folks are "prodigals" who have walked away from any kind of spiritual familial relationship with the Creator. (What's a "family" member you no longer have any relationship with?)

The Mormons really do believe that Jesus and Satan are brothers, so why are you disgusted at Huckabee for saying something that is factual?

The point is this: Who cares if Mitt is a Mormon.

Ask yourself why did The Huckster bring this up in the first place? He didn't bring it up to simply ask a question, he did it to smear Mitt as a religious kook. That's low. Mitt gave his speech on religion, and whether you believe in what he says or not, he raised the level of debate on the subject. It was thoughtful. The Huckster, with his obvious smear tactic, is appealing to lowest denominator thinking. Its clear he judges people on their religion. It is a pattern. He wants to be president of all? Not very presidential thinking as far as I am concerned.

So, do you think it was OK for Romney to make a huge deal of his "religion" speech from the library of George H.W. Bush and enjoy the resulting publicity for days afterward?

Very good question. I would surmise that over half of the folks who have railed against Huckabee for one minor religious reference to Mormonism said absolutely nothing negative about Romney for an entire speech meant to both elevate Mormonism while deflecting concerns about it.

Gee, satan. So sorry. That was rude of me to blemish your family line by insinuating that Huckabee was your brother.

I do not believe that strict Mormon theology matches up with Christian theology, but the point is:

Who cares when it comes to a Presidential candidate?

This hamhanded and clumsy attempt to attack Mitt Romney for his religion is the kind of missteps that will guarantee that Mike Huckabee will not be the Republican nominee.

Yes Huck was right. Once again we find Mormonism distorting its own record.

This is the thing I find MOST disturbing about Romney who is a follower of Mormonism, the penchant for distorting truth, pandering, flip-flopping. Mormonism teaches these practices. Google “Lying for the Lord.”

Mormons started by lying about the practice of polygamy way back in the 1830’s and 40’s, and it blossomed from there simply because the tactic works so well. It seems to be working in Romney’s campaign.

That is the reason I am here. To show the hypocrisy.

The LDS church leaders have not commented on Romney’s abortion stance because they do not make any political statements..

Is it the position of the LDS church that that is a political statement, or your own interpretation, UMB? One would agree with Graybeard that "Abortions are an abomination and I say that as a moral statement, not a political one."

Still missing the point I see. Your boy opens his yap and hands a gift to the dems on a regular basis. He lacks class and smarts. They’d have him for breakfast.

And 33 posts in four years. Another undercover Mormon, coming out of the woodwork to “hit” the truth, so now one will discern it.

Your boy opens his yap and hands a gift to the dems on a regular basis.

He's not "my boy" (I'm still in the undecided camp; Duncan Hunter & Tancredo best reflect my views). So I'm not necessarily disagreeing with this last comment of yours ('yap').

I'm just saying that when folks get all bent out of shape over one minor yawn ('cause that's opening a 'yap' too) when a certain Mormon candidate last week kept opening & closing & opening & closing his yap about "faith"--including the Mormon faith last week--that many of these same people weren't concerned about that "yap" opening with gifts being handed to the Dems.

Can you imagine an '08 scenario where a scandal knocks out the D frontrunner and we have a scenario of Obama vs. a man who was an adult in a church that denied the priesthood to blacks--all on the basis of the color of their skin & their belief system behind that?

(Talk about one major gift being handed to the Dems!!! Yet we don't see posters like you pointing that out, now do we?)

Those who are believers must not tear one another apart. What man or woman is to say what faith is the correct one?

And as liberals, who may not have any morals, stand by and watch the destruction of any opposing candidates, they get the last laugh. The United States and those of faith are the losers.

We are at a critical time in history. Band together as one in faith, and your enemy will perish.

Well that's such a wide open relativistic statement you can't even separate a Muslim from a Christian! (Muslims are "believers," too)

I agree. It is perfectly legal to be rude, profane, sacrilegious, stupid, and bigoted. Hopefully, people can rise to a higher level and be respectful, understanding, and tolerant.

Hopefully, those who throw the "bigot" word around can rise to a higher level and be respectful, understanding, and tolerant.

I’m shaking in my fruit of the loom’s.

Hope there are no Danites in Denmark. I know there are undercover Mormons everywhere. Old Porter Rockwell is an icon in Mormon history. Forget that he killed, smoked, cussed, fornicated, and drank heartily, among other things.

Got my Ruger and Remington here though, just in case.
BTW, I believe the three Nephites are also lurking on these threads.

Does this matter? Jesus didn't require that acknowledgement, just belief and faith. Do the Mormons have belief and faith in Christ?
