Both of my parents were immigrants to this country and were exactly how you described your landlords. They became Americans the day the arrived here and not only did they adopt the language asap, they also adopted American customs and culture. My father always said if he had wanted to be German he would have stayed in Germany. They also learned English, became educated and raised 5 children without a single handout from anyone other than a little help in the beginning from a church. They both loved this nation until the day they died.
No worries. This is not Londonistan.
"More than 96 percent of Yoders, Kruegers, Muellers, Kochs, Schwartzes, Schmitts and Novaks were white. Nearly 90 percent of the Washingtons were black, as were 75 percent of the Jeffersons, 66 percent of the Bookers, 54 percent of the Banks and 53 percent of the Mosleys."
(Interesting, if trivial, irony: "Schwartz" is the German word for "black.")
Mohammed ranks # 3419 now. However, it is up 3112 places since 1990. Possibly due to Muslim conversions, where they have to assume a Muslim surname, but that is just a guess.
It doesn't strike me as odd at all...I'm guessing that number includes persons who are the last of their line in this country, those who have just immigrated and not yet started families, persons with non-traditional spellings of more popular surnames (i.e., Smythe, Jaansen, etc.) and the various pop culture circus freaks, rap stars, and their camp followers that have their show names legalized.
When I read that quote, I really wished the author of the piece had asked him...”Why do you say that?”

Indeed. Is that some sort of typo?
susie
Yea, it would be fun watching the racist jerk stumble around that one.
Which, of course, is why they never ask those sorts of questions to those sorts of people.
