Alabama state Senator Harri Anne Smith seeks 2nd congressional district seat

State Sen. Harri Anne Smith, R-Slocomb, is trying to do what few women have ever done: represent Alabama in Congress.

Smith, 45, announced Thursday she is running for the 2nd Congressional District seat held since 1993 by Rep. Terry Everett, R-Rehobeth, who is not seeking re-election next year.

Smith stressed her qualifications while making her announcement on the steps of the State House. She is executive vice president of Slocomb National Bank. She was elected mayor of Slocomb in 1996, elected to the state Senate in 1998 and re-elected in 2002 and 2006.

At a news confelrence on the statehouse steps, Smith made the announcement on a cool windy morning with her husband, Charlie Smith, at her side, and her mother, Marjorie Harris, standing nearby.
