Here’s the thing.....

....whenever you are talking young healthy people, generally homicide or suicide are among the highest PERCENTAGE of deaths.

The leading cause of deaths im teenagers is suicide. That sentence alone can be shouted by the drive-by media and it might be implicating a lot more than the statistic means.

Maybe 10% of all adolescent deaths are by suicide. Maybe the other ninty percent is a variety of things...maybe auto accidents, maybe criminal activity.

See, healthy young people don’t generally die of diseases and such. Pregnant women are, by their very condition, usually young and healthy. I’m not surprised at all that homicides would be the largest single PERCENTAGE of death in pregnant women. I can’t emphasize that percentage word enough. You might have ten percentages that are encompass all deaths: 12,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2...with that 12 percent being the highest percentage but it’s still only that percent of ALL deaths.

But yes, that would be expected that homicide would be the highest percentage of deaths in pregnant women. It’s so very misleading when shouted out with a gravitas it does not deserve. Look at that one cited study...651 dead pregnant women over an eight year period? That’s not very money and I would remind, wouldn’t homicides in general, be higher in the DC area where the study was done?

The statistic means nothing, I’d argue. But it could very well be quite true.

Well to be fair- the reporter mentioned it as an aside- part of the story- it was a very small part of what she reported. And it came up as part of a live interview with the reporter- it wasn’t something CNN dug up and reported on independently..
