Herod did many things worse than that. Besides the Talmud was not contemporaneous with these events and Josephus was not even alive.

We know more about the last century before Christ than we don about the third century afterwards. A professor of medieval history told our class that much is said aboiut Phillip the Fair of France and almost nothing is known. An American hstorian started out to wrote a study of the Radical Republicans of civil war times, following Namier’s model of his study of the 18th century English parliament. To his surpise he found that little was know about the great majority of them than what was inscribed on their tombstones or in their obituaries.

The children reported as being killed by Matthew were those in the town of Bethlehem.

That problem is simple. Dionysius Exiguus who made a calender of the times made an error in 544 AD. This is agreed to by all historians.
Herodian travel story:
In March of 1990 I was traveling alone in Israel. I drove to Herodian in the middle of the week, late morning close to lunchtime. Thought it was closed because not a tour bus was in sight; the parking lot was vacant. Well, there was one beat up old car with Arab plates...
Anyway, I parked and walked up to the little kiosk entrance. In it sat an old Arab man. He was cordial, and gave me a key and a flashlight, telling me to be sure and re-lock the gates as I went through.
Okay, seemed a little strange but I figured this guy was way too old to be of any harm so I proceeded on through. Wouldn’t have so much as stepped out of the car today.
What an experience, wandering through the dark passageways, all alone and locked in. Always had one ear out for that gate being unlocked, though. lol. I finally arrived at the second gate, which led in to the center of the fortress, at the cistern. As I walked up and out of this area, I was treated to the most unforgettable 360 panoramic view of the surrounding hills. The spring weather had been unstable, thus the sky was a mix of deep blue patches, foreboding black clouds and billowing cumulus clouds. All the while the sun played hide and seek, its rays steaming out in every direction, painting stripes in the sky and on the verdant landscape. I really can’t begin to describe it. I had the place all to myself for the entire visit.
I looked around wondered why Herod’s tomb had escaped discovery. In this mound jutting out of nowhere, there just didn’t seem to be much of a place for it to hide. I can’t wait to find out where exactly they found it.

The ‘Anno Domini’ system of dating based on the work of Dennis the Short in the sixth century is generally agreed to have be flawed, most scholars agreeing that it was off by four years, and that Our Lord was actually born according to the flesh in what is conventionally called 4 B.C.
Incidentally, there was no year 0. None of the numeration systems in use in the Roman Empire in the time of Christ, or of St. Justinian, for that matter, included the number 0, not the Roman, nor the Greek, nor Hebrew, nor Syriac. Zero was imported into Europe from the Hindus by way of the Muslims (whose brief scientific flowering—killed by the rigid adoption of occasionalist epistemology tied to the Qu’ran—was based entirely on combining the previously existing scientific accomplishments of the Hindus and the Greeks.)
Many have speculated that much of the stories such as killing of innocents, wandering for 40 days and seeking asylum in Egypt was done to "borrow" credibility for Jesus as similar things had happened to Moses.
