WELLINGTON, New Zealand — This is a dog story.

It's about a plucky little Jack Russell terrier named George, who stood like a giant against two marauding pit bulls and gave his own life to save five kids from the steel-trap jaws and razor-sharp teeth of the vicious attack machines.

I’m a dog lover of all breeds...the pitbull suffers today mainly because of “backyard breeding” practices, abuse, and encouragement of its fighting spirit. I have in my lifetime been associated with several family dogs which could be classified as “pitbulls” (an American Staffordshire Terrier, two Bullterriers, and an American bulldog). All were socialized and gentlemanly, one even let my cat drink from the same water bowl as him (Think Cesar, The National Geographic Channel’s “Dog Whisperer,” Milan’s dog “Daddy”). Pitbulls, IMHO, are like firearms. In the hands of well-trained competent persons they’re safe and fine; in the hands of fools, outlaws or children they’re very dangerous. Punish the owner, not the dog.

Reminds me of the time my Collie took a nasty Boxer down by the throat to protect my sister.

"Brother Pele's in the back, sweet Zina's in the front
Cruisin' down the freeway in the hot, hot sun
Suddenly red and blue lights flash us from behind
Loud voice booming, 'Please step out on the line'
Pele preaches words of comfort, Zina just hides her eyes
Policeman taps his shades, 'Is that a Chevy '69?'

How bizarre"

Pitbulls should not be allowed in populated areas. It is absurd to argue otherwise. I know, you probably know one that is a sweet little teddy bear. That’s what all pitbull owners claim. It is odd how these angles have mauled children to death time and time again. Then the owners have the audacity to blame the victim and say the dog must have been antagonized. I’m for very harsh penalties for any owner of a vicious dog that attacks a person.

“Pitbulls, IMHO, are like firearms”

Ridiculous! A gun can not roam around on its own and kill defenseless people. The dogs should be destroyed and the owners thrown into a cage for a very long time!

With the exception of the last sentence that is essentially the same argument the gun-banners use, with "pit bull" substituted for "assault weapon," "sniper rifle," or whatever the boogyman of the day is.

True story (really): Had a pretty gal friend — lost touch years ago — who had an Irish wolfhound. She was walking her dog one Spring day, and a guy with a pitbull on a leash was coming the other way. He let go of the dog’s leash and said “sick ‘im.” The pit bull charged. Friend yelled, “call him off,” he shrugged. So she let her dog go, too.

The result: one swipe of a paw, one broken-back dead pitbull. The jerk wasn’t too happy, but what was he going to do?

PS That Irish wolfhound was a great dog — extremely playful and friendly. Only problem is that he thought he was a lapdog — ooooffff! (For those who don’t know, Irish wolfhounds can be HUGE, and this one was.)

PPS Don’t blame the dogs, in the story or here. Blame the sorry, worthless, scumbag owners. Uncle has rotty’s, which are as demonized as pit bulls. Always has, always will. Great, fun, friendly, loyal dogs, all of ‘em. Why? Because that’s how he raises them. Now, I still pity anyone who breaks into his place...

Associating my argument to gun control is a logical fallacy. Nice effort though.

A dog is a living being with senses and responds to stimuli. My gun does not.

Nine-years-old. Old George looks a bit tired in the picture. More impressive that he’s still got the fire in him.

I’ve got a dog who’s ten, but he is deaf as a stump. Still pretty lively when he’s not sleeping, which is always.

Ridiculous! A gun can not roam around on its own and kill defenseless people.

Neither do properly trained and socialized "pitbulls"!

The dogs should be destroyed and the owners thrown into a cage for a very long time!

As Spartan King Leonidas said to the Persians, "come and get them"...because, like my firearms, my dogs will be surrendered from my dead cold hands. You're no different than moonbat gun-grabbers IMHO!

Yes, you are correct. JRT history:

“The Jack Russell Terrier was developed in 19th century England by a clergyman named Jack Russell. This feisty little terrier was used to hunt small game, particularly fox, by digging the quarry out of its den. Breeders have emphasized its working ability, so the standard is very broad, encompassing a wide range of accepted body types. On English hunts, the Jack Russell Terriers were supposed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds. The energetic and playful Jack Russell makes a good family companion. Some of the Jack Russell’s talents include: hunting, tracking, agility, and performing tricks.”

JRT Temperament

“The Jack Russell Terrier is a perky, merry, devoted, and loving dog. Spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless. Careful and amusing, he enjoys games and playing with toys. Friendly and generally kind to children who have been taught not to tease or strike the dog. They are intelligent, yet willful and determined. They can be slightly difficult to train and need a firm, experienced trainer. The Jack Russell can be aggressive with other dogs if not well trained and socialized. Some have killed or been killed in dog fights. Early socialization can help substantially moderate this trait. They have strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. They like to chase and explore. Be careful not to let them off the lead unless they are very well-trained. Jack Russells like to bark and dig. They tend to get restless and destructive if not kept fruitfully occupied and well exercised. Jack Russells climb, which means they can climb over a fence, they also jump. A Jack that stands 12 inches high can easily jump five feet. JRTs are not the breed for a inexperienced dog owner. This is a BIG dog in a little dogs body. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as they are, or this little guy will take over. With the right owner this little dog can really excel, but is not recommended for those who have not had prior experience with terriers.”

Your argument assumed the consequent and relied on anecdotal evidence and correlation implying causation. Whether or not pit bulls respond to stimuli is irrelevant.

We have had 8 Jack Russels (Jack, Doc, Bobo, Zoe, Lolly, Tootie, Hairy and Cookie) over the last 15 years with 4 of those being Jack Russel rescues. We love the breed and will always have them.

The main problem with pit bulls is pit bull owners, not the pit bulls.

“Good riddance to the pit bulls, and hopefully to their owners/trainers as well if it is found that these monsters were drugged.”

Criminals who buy pit bulls frequently abuse them to make them more aggressive for dogfighting or for protecting drug stashes.

I’ve been attacked before and the owner was nowhere around. Nothing happened to the owners and I was the bad guy for making the city take their sweet angle away. As I got older my brother couldn’t even go outside alone because another neighbor got a “harmless” dog that wouldn’t stay in their backyard. It’s sad when you have to walk your family out to the car with a loaded pistol pointed at a growling Rottweiler standing in your yard. It took the city months to finally haul that one away. Thank God everyone kept their children locked in their houses. So you guys are saying that I should just deal with it and not make a fuss huh?

I’m sure you know, you are yoddeling in the wind with this bunch.

Pit bulls bad! bad, bad, bad!

You cannot have a rational, logical discussion with the mindset.

Sit back, relax, laugh as the fartgas flows.
