"South Park" goes after Catholic leader

The folks at "South Park" take no prisoners.

Consider Wednesday's episode, which went after Bill Donohue, president of the conservative Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights. Donohue has been a severe critic of the animated series on Comedy Central.

The episode mixed Easter and "The Da Vinci Code" in typically wacky fashion. The plot involved the current pope and Jesus. The story ended with Jesus cutting Donahue in half with a flying ninja blade.

In other recent controversies, Donohue has called the co-creators of "South Park," Matt Stone and Trey Parker, whores and cowards.

They are cowards. How about a recurring Mohammed character on South Park? Hmmmm?

OK, everyone, one last time for the record.. ever since the episode Super Best Friends (#68), Mohammad has been a recurring character on the show.. if you know where to look...
Hint.. watch the opening carefully...

I was pretty mad at that [double] epi. Horrible lack of time for the Wilma Deering character.

I’m just curious. If the content of the show is “offensive” to Catholics, then why watch it? If the offended parties aren’t watching it, then whats the problem.....Oh, that’s right, if YOU don’t want to watch it, nobody can watch it. Quick tip, not all of us are Catholic or even Christian, and nobody is going to convert us.
Some thumpers have lists of people that they envision will rot in hell. They joyfully look forward to a world in which the Inquisition is empowered once again. Consider their attacks as a desire to silence such ideas through the power of the state which is led by the church--an idea of church power/authority wholly foreign to American sensibilities but they do their damnedest to bring about it nonetheless.

LOL, you’re really getting wound up over a cartoon, aren’t you? ;p

Nah, not really. I get more wound up about how people lionize mental midgets like the South Park guys. In 20 years, they'll be embarrassed to admit they ever watched the show. Kind of like people who used to watch The Monkees.

But as usual, not really nailing the religion itself, but the stupid people in it

ding ding ding ding ding, we have a winner!! Technically, with the exception of Scientology (assuming you consider Mormons, Christians) the religion itself is left alone, it is the followers who are mocked..
Pretty much every religion's followers have been mocked (yes, including Islam, over and over and over..) Catholics seem to be the butt of more jokes simply because they are always raising their voices personally against M&T saying they "whores and cowards" and the ilk..
If, for example, the Dali Llama personally said something about M&T, you can bet your cheesy poofs that Buddhism would be the next target....

Basically, Donohue keeps asking for it.. :->
He has made it personal to M&T..

Oh really? So that episode about the statue of the Blessed Mother "bleeding out of her @ss" wasn't bashing Catholics or Catholic belief, eh?

So you are saying the statue was a representative of the Blessed Mother and should be held in such regard.. hmmmm... sounds like a 'graven image' to me..

Funny how they made fun of Mohamed once, for about 10 secs and never have replayed it

I have seen it at least three times -- and I don't mean three times in the same week. That epsode most recently aired in late February during the last week of reruns before the new series started the first week of March.

“Does “South Park” every make fun of Islam? I don’t watch the show.”

i think they may have once. It was prior to the whole cartoon rage in europe, and it was pretty mild considering their vicious episodes on christianity.

They are very fond of hitting catholicism as they obviously dislike it and know that catholics won’t call for their decapitated heads.

The Mormon episode was the most interesting. They did trash the religion's origins throughout, but the actual point was at the end when the Mormon kid confronted (IIRC) Kyle. The whole thing turned out to be against those people who denigrate good, honest, happy religious folk just because of the questionable origins of the religion itself.

A Mormon who shut it off in the middle because he was offended would have missed the whole point.

Some are proud of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum but I would categorize it as the work of mental midgets. What say you?

My favorite Monkee was Mike Nesmith http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Nesmith who was instrumental in the creation of country-rock, was the first to receive a Grammy for a rock video, pioneered the home movie video market with Pacific Video, and single handedly created music video TV with his Nickelodeon Pop Clips which he sold to Time Warner that turned it into MTV.

Nesmith’s mom invented Liquid Paper.

“I can’t get too angry at South Park. At least they’re an equal-opportunity offender.”

Bob Newhart said in an interview that comics basically are very mean spirited people.

I think he’s right.

Ah, I get it. You recognize that this is offensive to Catholics and you're ok with it because ... you think it's good to insult Catholics.

Let me try to explain this in terminology so simple, even a chimp can understand...

Let's say someone took a picture (a representation) of your own mother and insulted her on national television and referred to her "bleeding out the ass," in the picture. Would you just turn the channel and say "no big deal"?

Television is a low-class medium. It was true when it was first said and it’s true now.

Nope, I don't recognize it as an insult to Catholics.. I recognize it as an insult to people who put statues in place of God, something real Catholics wouldn't do.
Real Catholics don't pray to statues for healing..

..and if I started praying to a statue of my mom and worshiping her as a God, she would probably be the first person to put something insulting up about herself to straiten out my priorities and shock me into thinking..

Let’s burn all televisions...but first we’ll burn the books that offend us.

Back in the old days, the authorities had problems with pamphlet writers. In Europe, the church authorities cut off the hand of the offender and put their works to the fire. If they continued writing ideas not accepted by the religious authorities they were tortured and killed. Their families were branded as non-conformist. Their property was seized. And they lost all titles and honors.

This is exactly the kind of tripe Donohue should be speaking out about. He should stay away from church/state issues.
