Senate backs troop withdrawal from Iraq

The U.S. Senate on Tuesday endorsed a March 31, 2008, target date for withdrawing American combat troops from Iraq, moving Congress a step closer to a showdown with President George W. Bush over the war.

By a vote of 50-48, the Senate defeated an amendment that would have stricken the withdrawal language from a $121.6 billion bill that mostly would fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A final vote on the bill is expected later this week.

It is only "non-binding" if Bush keeps his promise to veto this crap.

Otherwise troop funding is tied to a specific withdrawal date.

Correct... Bush doesn't care about the dems, but the 15th is an important date for the military.

He wants to veto it ASAP so they can get started on passing the clean bill, and not be able to say Bush was the bad guy, vetoing a bill at the last minute.

This way the dems have 3 weeks and have to explain why they can't get it done (instead of blaming Bush... though I'm sure they'll try.

Okay. Let's withdraw. There are two routes out - one through Tehran, and one through Damascus...

Sure... you might want to start by taking a breath and noticing that every democrat voted for it, and every republican against.

Really? EVERY republican? Check again.

Not sure about the rest of you, but the next time the opportunity arises to rid the GOP of Rinos, the old thread-bare lesser of two evils argument that has worked to weaken my resolve in the past will fall upon stone deaf ears.

I hope Landrieu pays for this come 2008. She and Congressman Charlie "Bribe me with millions for shrimp farmers" Melancon need to go.

Hagel is just cynically putting off the "I'm switching parties" announcement, but he has LONG since left the party.

The only good thing about the 2006 elections was that turd Chafee got flushed with everyone else... just too bad the stench of Hagel is still lingering.

I won't forget...I'm from Nebraska. Hagel is a disgrace. He wouldn't even win this State if he ran for President. Nelson...he's a democrat masquerading as a "moderate." His vote is no surprise. Disappointing, but no surprise. I hope all those Nebraska "conservatives" that voted for Nelson this past November are pleased with their vote.
