SENATE STAFFER BUSTED FOR CARRYING WEBB'S LOADED GUN: Phillip Thompson, executive assistant to Senator James Webb (D-VA ), has been arrested by Capitol Hill Police on Monday for 'inadvertently' holding the senator's loaded gun, according to a person close to the investigation. A Senate staffer reports that Thompson was arrested for carrying the gun in a bag through security at the Russell Senate Office building while the Senator was parking his car. Thompson was booked for carrying a pistol without a license (CPWL) and for possessing unregistered ammunition.

Statement by Jessica Smith, Webb Communications Director:

"To our knowledge, this incident was an oversight by the Senator's aide. Phillip Thompson is a former Marine, a long-term friend and trusted employee of the Senator. We are still awaiting facts." Developing...

why was the senator parking Thompson's car? I'm betting he was riding around the garage smoking dope.

This guy ought to get a deal - plead immediately to the charges - and Bush should pardon him. Just to put egg on Webb's face, since Webb has been so rude to him.

That would be very, very clever.

Unfortunately, I think Bush is tone-deaf to this type of sophistication and is not politically intuitive.

I believe Webb has a Conceal Carry permit. He's an avid gun guy. And while I won't hold my breath waiting, he promised to push to allow people with CCW to carry in federal parks.

So the real problem I see here is that a man with a CCW permit allowed his gun to be carried concealed by a person without a CCW, in a city the man wasn't allowed to carry a gun in.

Webb in other words did a very poor job of controlling access to his weapon and ammunition.

I'd say he let an untrained person have access to his weapon, but his aide is I believe a former marine so I think he's probably OK with guns.

He was a Republican for as long as he worked for Reagan - which was less than a year. Puh-leeze, he didn't cross over from the dark side. He infiltrated our side.

I don't know how he is on the issue, so I'd like to be informed.

Would you care to make a guess for all to see? Or not?

I guess Webb will have to go on the record of being pro-gun and 2nd Amendment or the NRA will crucify him for this.

Webb has always been pretty openly pro-gun/pro-2nd amendment, hasn't he?

Politics aside, I fiercely support the 2nd Amendment. I would HATE to see any goverment official or elected representative prosecuted for carrying a gun. This would set a terrible precident and strike a blow against gun rights.

I have no problem with anybody carrying a gun. Carrying one INTO Congress is another story all together.

"Webb is a deeply bizarre man, capable of anything. He is a real Sicko."

THAT election had to be stolen.

Isn't possession of any firearm illegal in Washington DC?

That's the rumor... ;-)

So he is *effectively* a gun banning liberal lesbian

LOL!

But seriously... By that logic, Mike DeWine was a right-wing gunnut. In fact, anti-gun Republicans can be counted on by the antis to support any gun control scheme they can dream up. When bad gun laws get passed, it's almost always an anti-gun Republican who casts the deciding vote. We're better off with pro-gun Democrats. At least with them, there's a chance that they might buck their party's leadership. On the other side of that coin, there little chance at all that an anti-gun Pubbie will follow the party leadership.

Isn't it illegal for someone with a license to carry to give possession of his gun to someone else?

Methinks Webb's license to carry ought to be revoked.

Register your undershorts in DC?

Nahhh... That would impact Democrats disproportionately.

What?

Am I missing something or are you trying to imply that Republicans don't wear underwear?
