From An Eyewitness To The 1971 "Antiwar" DC Riots.

Posted on 03/06/2007 8:55:27 PM PST by InfantryMarine

A little more motivation for' Gathering of Eagles in DC. from one who has witnessed firsthand what happens when radicals gain the upper hand:

" A little piece of history about the antiwar movement: After serving with the 101st Abn Div in Vietnam and returning to the States in 1969, I was stationed at Ft Belvoir, VA, just outside Washington DC. After joining the Military Police Corps, I became a Military Police Investigator (MPI).

On April 22, 1971, during the Winter Soldier Investigation, John Kerry, Vietnam Veterans of the War (VVAW) leader, testified before Senate Committee hearings accusing Honorable Vietnam Veterans of committing an array of unsubstantiated atrocities and killings in Vietnam.

A few days later on Apr 24th, Kerry, Jane Fonda and their radical band of hippie antiwar commie protesters and members of the VVAW, staged 5 days of damaging riots which virtually closed down Washington. During these riots DC monuments and government buildings and, etc., were damaged to the extent that the DC police could not handle the out of control riots with a reported estimated 500,000 protesters. As a result of these riots the Military Police from all of the surrounding bases were called into DC to support the police with riot and damage control. I had the privilege of battling and assisting the DC police in apprehension of thousands of those radicals. At the end of these riots a reported toll of about 1,800 protesters were apprehended which filled up all of the surrounding jails and resulted in fast track court hearings almost around the clock. kerry was also arrested during these riots.

As a Proud 101st Screaming Eagle Vietnam Vet, I guess I was one of the first "Gathering of Eagles" to confront the kerry ~ fonda anti-war radicals and Win. The current antiwar movement on Mar 17, 2007, is no different than the Vietnam Era group, in fact many current participants are the same Vultures who were involved in the 1971 riots on the mean streets of DC. These radical hippie "Flower Children" have now grown up to be "Blooming Idiots."

Best of Luck to all "Gathering of Eagles" Veterans and Patriots standing side by side not tolerating the desecration, damage or dishonor of any fashion to our hallowed Memorials and Supporting Our Troops.

Keep The Faith, Bob G "

Actually, it will be the same folk this time but without the youthful "useful idiots" to do the dirty work. Though they like to believe they can rekindle the 60's, they haven't done so in numbers or deeds.

Jerry Rubin would be so ashamed of their lame leadership.

Their attempt at Operation Dewey Canyon became "Screwy Canyon". Initially they planned for thousands to sleep out on the Mall like during the Days of Rage. And they told the 911 Conspiracy Nuts to stay away because they didn't want to be seen with kooks.

They had their tents up and small crowds, so they gave over one of the tents to "Kookfest" where the 911 Conspiracy Nuts could show their films. Like I said, "Operation Screwy Canyon". The actual organizers are all in their 60s and despite tokens like Sharpton, Conyers, Watres and Jesse...it's a lilly white communist power structure. They have some young tokens too, but no one who calls the shots.

And there's none of this happening on college campuses, while in the 60's there were hundreds of campus marches.

If this war had taken place 10 years from now, there would have been no anti-war marches because the leaders, Benjamin, Evans, Murphy, Cagen, Becker and Becker, Cline and the others would all be in "The Home" gumming their "Cream of Wheat".

I happened to be in DC at that time on a family trip. I was just a kid, but I was struck by how mangy and dirty all the protesters were. They had taken over the Mall around the Washington Monument and were sitting around in groups all over it. There was a big medal-throwing ceremony at one point. They were kind of scary to a little kid, but now I would probably just view them as wasting their time and making asses out of themselves.

I went to watch a Rennie Davis speech back in '72 at Penn State. He was on fire talking about all kinds of newfangled weapons the US was using in Vietnam. He especially liked to say, "laaaaazzzer beams!" I understand he is now a fairly successful venture capitalist.

Having "participated" in a few "protests" back in the day (Vietnam war, Ho Chi Min trail bombing, other related stuff I forget) I can tell you that 99% of the kids were there for the wine, the pot, and the chicks. Trust me, the percentage of loudmouthed "true believers" (ie., provocateurs) was in the small handful range. "Protest march" was just another name for "big party".

I have a different memory of the events.

It was the first time I learned how the media really was, on a national scale.

I remember watching the media coverage as the people started showing up in D.C., they made it sound like a war, so I immediately started hitch hiking to there.

I figured it would be difficult to enter the city, but in reality as I reached the city, the people picking me up seemed amused when I described the perceptions the rest of the country was getting from the media outlets.

I spent two weeks there, including time jailed at the coliseum and then in the city jail. I remember attending events and then reading two different versions in the newspapers the next day, one newspaper was pretty accurate (don't remember which one), but the other one described violence and mayhem that just didn't happen.

When I left the city, I had my original experience in reverse, this time as I left a relatively peaceful city I noticed that the farther away from the city I got, the more convinced the people were, that the city was in total chaos.

Ever since that time I have known to not believe the media's description of such events.

By the way, the National Guard loved us, and having grown up dealing with violent, somewhat crooked, and largely incompetent Houston cops, I was amazed and impressed at the calm, detached professionalism of the D.C police of that era.

While I saw the D.C. police release a little violence, it was delivered in an unemotional, and controlled manner, and there was very little of it, almost none at the Justice Department building.

It must feel good to see the country finally repudiate those losers and regain some sense of itself. Welcome home, soldier! Since 1975, we've all been "out in the wilds."

At least this time if they are throwing garbage cans in the streets, there is a good chance they might throw their back out as well...(8^D)
