Ann's Jedi Mind Trick At CPAC
March 3, 2007 | aas

Posted on 03/03/2007 11:33:15 AM PST by an amused spectator

On Friday, March 1, 2007, Ann Coulter spoke at the 34th annual Conservative Political Action Conference.

Toward the end of her remarks, she touched on the subject of Democrat John Edwards (former US Senator from North Carolina and 2008 presidential hopeful):

"Oh, and - I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, ummm, but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so, I — so - kind of at an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards, so I think I'll just conclude here and take your questions. Thank you."

Notice the Jedi Mind Trick that Ann uses here. She talks about Edwards, then segues to a newsworthy current event in the world of entertainment, then segues back to John Edwards.

She never calls John Edwards a faggot - she allows the minds of her listeners to do that for themselves. Now, a person who was actually at the event may be forgiven for momentarily falling for the mind trick, but's what's hilarious is the number of weak-minded or sloppy thinkers who are OUTRAGED, OUTRAGED that "Ann Coulter called John Edwards a faggot!!!". There are actual "hard news" websites that actually repeat this blather (UPI, E&P, and The Nation, among others).

I also read an article on a weblog complaining that noted mainstream media outlets are ignoring the story (among these: The Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post and The New York Times). Apparently, the AP, Reuters, the WP & the NYT are on to Coulter's Jedi mind tricks, and are willing for others to make buffoons of themselves before piling on.

Coulter's command of the language reminds one of Clemens or Bierce, and the way she can get her critics to do the work of lampooning themselves is simply amazing (and amusing).

I note that Howard Dean's "outrage" quote of the day doesn't deny the allegation!

Every army has its spear throwers, arrow launchers and bomb throwers. Just look at the DNC. They are on the airwaves daily.

I didn't see this but it appears to a clever use of english linguistics by Ms. Colter. I'm sure Bill O'Reilly when he criticizes Bill Maher for his comments last night and he'll bunch Ann Coulter's comments in with Bill Maher and suggest they're the same.

At least she didn't say he was "niggardly."

Oh, please! Don't feign ignorance or worse. There'd be no reason in the world to call his a cigarette.

She called him a bunch of sticks.

TS
(actually, that works -- he's a hick from the sticks, right?)

I think it may have been some sort of tie-in with North Carolina's vibrant tobacco industry...

There are actual "hard news" websites that actually repeat this blather

The media long ago found it easier to misrepresent stories into something they aren't so they can sell it in a sound bite. That's how 'lying under oath in a court case' became 'all about sex' for Clinton. Don't expect them to do the hard job of actually explaining what happened-- they'll take the shortcut over truth any time.

I'm no Edwards supporter but I think Ann may be a little over the top on this one. This is basically lib talk, why get into the gutter with them. IMO

The point is that SHE didn't say anything about Edwards. She let the minds of her various audiences do that for her.

Well, the Silk Pony is certainly prissy (ref: the video of him prissying up his hair), but perhaps not a sissy. Faggot (also a bundle of sticks) is more a male prep schoolish term for someone who is not a sissy - a general putdown. 'Twas no doubt a term used frequently in jest by yutes from tony Greenwich, Connecticut.

I'll bet that Coulter stays away from "niggardly" because she realizes that the weak-minded might do an Ox-Bow Incident on her before cooler heads prevailed.

Ann is very shrewd, she knew exactly what she was doing and she got the desired result. The bloggerheads over on Edward's blog are wringing their hands and whimpering at the wailing wall over it too. Apparently she outsmarted all those nitwits without even trying hard.
