Why would you not expect it? The Dead weren't wacko anti-America musicians. They were rarely political and would never have pulled Dixie-chicks type of nonsense. I think you were being presumptuous about them.
I like their music, but a couple of months ago Bob Weir said the following, during an interview on the syndicated "Grateful Dead Hour" radio show:
"The only difference between George Bush and Adolf Hitler, is that Hitler was elected."

...Bob Weir said the following, during an interview... Jerry and Phil always had the sense to keep their mouths shut about politics, etc. (for the most part). Weir seemed to think that his ideas on various subjects were important and wanted to be listened to. A real egoist, he is. I don't think any of them were great intellectuals or studied ideas all that much. Plus they did LOADS of really strong LSD and other drugs when they were young (and probably later too) in addition to coke, pot, booze and smack later. Weir is best ignored across the board now that Jerry's gone.

I was standing outside a Kwik-E-Mart in Kapa'a Kaua'i when a guy walks up to me and asks if I am Bob Weir. Five minutes later a guy walks up to me and asks if I am Neil Young.
