Cheney responds to Hagel's criticism

Vice President Dick Cheney shot back at Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel (news, bio, voting record) of Nebraska, who has accused the Bush administration of playing "a pingpong game with American lives" by sending more U.S. troops into Iraq.

"Let's say I believe firmly in Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment: Thou shalt not speak ill of a fellow Republican," Cheney said. "But it's very hard sometimes to adhere to that where Chuck Hagel is involved."

Cheney's comments came in a Newsweek interview released Sunday.

Hagel, a potential presidential candidate, has been outspoken in his criticism that the Republican White House lacks a coherent strategy in Iraq.

His "pingpong" remark came Wednesday as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee debated a nonbinding resolution that condemned Bush's troop buildup in Iraq. Hagel co-sponsored the measure, which the committee approved in a 12-9 vote.

He was the only Republican to vote for it.

Something is deeply wrong with Hagel, and methinks it is called 'ego'

Hagel has issues left over from Vietnam and has never dealt with them. It's one thing to oppose the conduct of the war on its merits but there is no other explanation for Hagel to jump up so ugly about it. It reflects impaired judgment and makes him unfit to be president, even if he otherwise had a chance.

CHUCK HAGEL! The next time Hagel runs for re-election, I hope all you Nebraska voters remember that he co-sponsored the non-binding resolution to criticise the President sending more troops to Iraq. If you have any of your kids already fighting over there, remember that Hagel would happily sacrifice their lives to his own political gain by not giving them reinforcements.

And he wants to run for president.

Vice President Cheney cuts through the BS faster than a Ginsu knife. Carry a BIG stick and SPEAK softly.

Vice President Cheney, Hagel's vote on this defining issue of our times makes him a "Democrat," not a RINO. The vote next week will reveal approximately 65 Democrats in the Senate, Lieberman not among them, along with 30 RINOs and perhaps 5 Republicans. Anyone counting on Mitch McConnell's senate to stop the Pelosi legislative train wreck almost certainly will suffer serial disappointment. Our only hope lies in the House Republicans holding together and attracting a handful of ostensibly conservative Democrats to interfere in the legislative process.

Most Senators generally are beneath contempt. Comparing them unfavorably with pond scum would offend the latter, which actually serves a useful purpose in its ecosystem. We expect Democrats to take the side of the enemy. We can reason that many recent defectors to the dark side are terminally spineless cowards afraid that any support for victory would not endear them to defeatist constituencies, although this rationale does not excuse their sedition.

But Chuck Hagel clearly ranks as the worst Senator, his siding with the enemies of the United States both inexcusable and inexplicable. He represents Nebraska, where his ideological partner John F. Kerry won a grand total of zero counties in the tenth consecutive trouncing of liberal Democrats in presidential elections. The people of Nebraska should welcome him home to real America with an embarrassing defeat in any primary hereafter held to restore their state to its former glory and greatness.

Poor planning on the part of the Republican Party, to run a person for Vice President who wasn't healthy enough to run for President, when the time came.

I'm not clear on why you answered my question that way - maybe you have a point that I'm missing; if so, please help me out and explain.

My question was posted as directly as I know how - and in response to the above quote.

Hagel is a Republican look alike but is really a democrat

Chucky baby a sniveling, back stabbing RINO and an embarrasment not sought after by either party.

In fact the present day Dem Butts are a conglomerate of all the above.

Hunter should have been selected VP in 2000, IMO.

Cheney made clear from the start that he would not run for president when his time as vp was over. His health is fine.

For any McCain supporters his health should be a big issue but it doesn't get mentioned.

Hagel is an empty suit who offers no ideas other than his own vain vanities. It's a sign of our times that this walking horse laugh is able to get so much time in front of a camera to say essentially nothing.

"Pray for W and Our Troops"

I do everyday. They are the ones that are actually getting this hard job done in spite of this enemy within that starts off with Pelosi and Cut and Run Murtha and goes on and on. God Bless America and All Who have worn Her uniforms and will continue to wear them.

Cheney was picked to help govern and get things done, not to win elections. I applauded them for it. Most politicans win and then start running again to keep their seat instead of doing the "right thing". They also pay more attention to polls instead of the "right thing". Bush and Cheney didn't.

I agree! I love watching him being interviewed. There is no finessing or dodging a question. Just straight forward, here it is answer. You can speak with confidence when you are speaking from truth.

I think it will actually be fortunate for us. If the administration's VP were to run in 2008 they'd lose by proxy. From a pure strategy perspective, better that the GOP nominate someone who can remain unassociated with the current administration.
