Maybe I should be, but I'm not too worried about them. I don't know the propper name for them, but I call them gattling guns. I think they would make short work of small suicide craft.

My nephew has served for a number of years on what he calls a boomer. He's told me some stories. They are pretty scary - for any enemy.

"You actually think those week kneed bunch in the US Congress are actually going to allow us to attack Iran? They will do absolutely everything, and I mean everything to stop Bush from doing anything. They have become the Cut and Run Congress of Amerika. They are cowards and will do nothing. Maybe after another 9-1-1 they will get off their butts for a couple of weeks, but then it will be back to trying to talk to them, make them understand we love them, we want to be their friends, why do you hate us so. That is the mentality of the US Congress, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ISLE, WHICH IN MY OPINION THERE IS NO ISLE ANYMORE, THEY ARE ALL LAME, and COWARDS!"

Bullseye!

Our congress has the backbone of a 3rd grade little girl. It will work triple overtime to appease Iran at every opportunity. It will actively seek out ways to create the appearance of weakness purely in an effort to avoid 'getting anyone upset'. We won't lift a finger to stop anything inside Irans borders... because someone might get their feelings hurt.

Pathetic.

.

Section9,

The Iranians have some quite diesel electrics and the ability to raise havoc in the Gulf for about a month until we concentrate forces to administer the Killer Blow.

It seems as we'd would already have Identified and Sonar-Tagged all of Iran's submarines (between us and the Brits) ... with additional 688-class subs lying in wait outside of every Iranian Naval Submarine base.

Yes, the land-based Silkworms and Sunburn missiles are a threat, but I'm sure that any U.S attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would include a coincidental "massive" attack on all Iranian land-based missiles.

Furthermore, with the two years the US-Great Britian have had to prepare for this genuine "Shock and Awe" military strike, and the massive amounts of intel gathered, we'll be in a great position to effectively "zero-out" all of Iran's power-projection forces in 24-36 hours, and maybe even less time than that.

The United States is still the premier military power on the planet, although (at this stage) very frustrated by our lack of complete success in Iraq (because we can't use massive military action against civilians).

However, Iran presents the United States a first-rate opportunity to really show everyone (including North Korea and Chavez) that we STILL have a glorious abundance of global ass-kicking power.

I think that an overwhelming 500 Cruise Missile strike (launched over 24 hours), plus massive air strikes by the B2 Bomber fleet, and our considerable air assets (forward-deployed in Iraq) ... would completely decimate Iran's naval and missile assets.

Iran's (certainly already prepared) counterstrikes would combine ICBM launches against critical Persian Gulf oil facilities (which the United States, interestingly enough, might secretly wish to be heavily damaged, especially for Saudi Arabia) ... with a massive Shiite rebellion in Iraand Saudi Arabia ... and activating Terrorist Sleeper Cells across Europe and the United States.

I'm sure the Americans and British intelligence agencies have spent the last two years (urgently) attempting to Identify and Tag ALL of these Iranian Terrorist Sleeper Cells ... just as we've been doing for the Iranian diesel submarine fleet.

The final thought ?

Iran has spent billions urgently trying to insanely piss-off the United States and Israel, subjugate the "moderate" Arab regimes, and torpedo the United States's attempt to bring westen-style Democracy to Iraq.

I for one would NOT want to be on President Bush's "genuine" "whup-ass" list, given the strategic miltary might at the President's disposal.

I hear that the new Iranian Navy all has portholes in the bottom of their boats...

Makes it easier to see the OLD Iranian Navy...

"Due to the shallowness and narrowness of the Gulf as well as "home field advantage", the Iranians have the upper hand if it came down to a naval engagement. It would be wise to tread there with caution."

Due to that same shallowness and narrowness, we would like sink everything more seaworthy than a rubber duck. It's one thing to catch an Israeli ship a couple miles off the coast, quite another to defend that much coastline from a constant barrage. If we go to war with Iran, the objective will truly be annihilation of the military infrastructure.

"On 04 August 1993, Iran took delivery of a second Russian Kilo-class diesel submarine, and the third arrived 18 January 1996. Russia went ahead with the first two deliveries despite vigorous US protests. In response to Administration pressure and US sanctions legislation, Russia formally pledged in June 1995 not to enter any new arms contracts with Iran, although prior arms contracts could be implemented."

Those subs may be quiet, but they are now ten plus years old and would be operating in a relatively shallow sea which I guarantee has more than a few listening devices. I doubt they ever dock outside well known Iranian slips, and I doubt they world cruise because of logistics. I bet their communications are compromised. So I suspect we know exactly where they are.

Recall the ChiCom sub sneaking up on a carrier recently?

Practice run by proxy (or instigator)?

Kilos are only quiet under five knots (more like three); they have to surface at intervals and make noise; their radio mast has a signature; they are never alone (Heh heh!)

The only problem I see is the "Shoot first" rule. That should be 86'd and replaced with the 'hundred mile' rule.

Yeah, I recall its complete bullshit, and FReepers need to stop believing everything they hear in the media.

Were the incident real as reported, you would have never heard a word about it.

Never heard a word from a more trustworthy source. All I had to go on.

Had a hard time believing a sub could get beyond the forward and aft deployed, the pickets and AWACs. The Japanese Navy has been on the ball tracking and finding them prowling lately. The ChiComs want to become a Blue Water navy, want to operate outside the Straits of Taiwan and the shallow seas.

Other than anything technical, clue me in why that story was reported.

Lotta ping-jockeys on those escort destroyers in that CBG asleep at the switch. I imagine a few careers will be quietly ruined over that one. I can't believe that in an entire CBG, there wasn't at least one ship with their sonar in active mode.

The nice thing about something like this is, it's a real-life wake-up call without the attendant deadly consequences. I don't think anyone who's career survived that experience will ever again get caught napping by some crappy-ass Chicom deisel-boat, and I imagine that the experience will ripple throughout the fleet.

We ought to thank the Chinese for the wake-up call.
