I would not want to be an Iranian seaman if hostilities break out with the United States.

Due to the shallowness and narrowness of the Gulf as well as "home field advantage", the Iranians have the upper hand if it came down to a naval engagement. It would be wise to tread there with caution.

They could make a splash for awhile with mines and Sunburn missles...one or two of their subs might get off a shot before being sunk.

Within 30 days, oil would be flowing through the straight and Iran will have lost its air Force, Navy and all ability to project conventional power beyond their borders.

I hope we have many PAC3's around the terminals of the Gulf states etc. The Iranians WOULD strike those, with all they had.

I'm sure our strategists have taken that into account. But the muslims always huff and puff until you kick their ass. They're good at killing civilians and not much else.

The Iranians would enjoy an initial strategic advantage from advanced mining and home field. However, while we would be able to overcome that, they would then deploy suicide boat attacks, which may cause our ships to have some radar problems. Also, don't forget that they've been purchasing advanced subs from the Chinese. So, we'd lose some people initially, then it comes down to whether we'd listen to the pussy liberal scumbags in this country when they start whining about pulling out.

Thank God these people weren't around in mass numbers during WWII.

If we are forced to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities, and I believe we will be, we must then carry out a sustained bombing campaign that will make all previous air campaigns look meek by comparison. Iran's air defense systems, air force, navy, police stations, weapons and ammunition storage depots, and all other military infrastructure must be completely destroyed so that Iran cannot resume its interference in the Gulf and in Iraq. Iran is an evil power; it is pure folly to ignore the threat it represents to civilization and democracy. Iran under the mullah theocracy has been the leading exporter of terror; it cannot be allowed to become a nuclear power. If we strike the mullahs, we must destroy there terror-making capabilities. We cannot make them martyrs and leaders of the radical Islamic terror movement, aligned with North Korea and Chavez in Venezuela.

I agree with your assessment, although I am little concerned about their sending suicide attacks against our ships, and then only because of the propaganda effect working on the oh-so-weak will of too many Americans.

"they would then deploy suicide boat attacks, which may cause our ships to have some radar problems."

To say the least. There is also the worry from land based anti ship missiles. For all the bravado being tossed around on FR, I seriously doubt any of those who spout it will have to face such serious risks. Those missiles are no joke.

further referred to the recent victory of the Lebanese Hezbollah

Lessons learned....
to Iran: not losing is victory....
to Iran: getting your @ss kicked doesn't count if you can still walk.....
for US bleeding heart liberals: Political Correctness, negotiating out of sympathy, and actually believing that "an enemy who you let walk off of the battle field will recognize that he is defeated" only shows your weakness, and encourages future attacks......

The question is, who has learned these lessons?

No doubt they can stop the tanker traffic by sinking one or two of them. They don't have to block the waterway. Fear and insurance costs will dictate tanker traffic. This is their single ace.
Once they're flattened, it will go away.

>>>It would be wise to tread there with caution.<<<

We are there, and the Iranians should tread with caution.

Check locations of US carriers. al Jazeera just had an article that there are 4 in the Gulf now.

Whoever gains air superiority and holds it wins. The Iranian army and navy is only as good as its air force and air defense weapons. Any plan to attack Iran will begin with destroying these forces.

One sunk US ship with the large casualty count that entails will have the US media waving the white flag.

Never underestimate the vulnerability a ships on the high seas and the propaganda coup the Iranians will have when one USS is inevitably sunk.

The US media our weak point and the Iranians aren't stupid.
