I wonder if the American boycott has something to do with this as well?

Regards, Ivan

My first thought as well. I'm a teetotaler, but if I were buying wine, La Belle France would not be getting any of my money.

Probably 10% of Americans who used to buy French wine are now buying alternative bottles from Australia, Spain, Chile, and California

What not just sell it cheap? Give the world a chance to see if French wine is any good.

Why pay high prices for French wine when Californian, Chilean, Australian, and South African wines are just as good if not better and much less expensive.

Of course it does. I don't even consider buying wine from France.

The euro at $1.32 doesn't help either.

Bucks are cheap. Buy American.

The problem is, the wine just doesn't sell. European vintages are languishing on the shelf as consumers around the globe reach for bottles from New World producers

That's what happens when your foreign policy steps all over one of the biggest wine markets.

"European vintages are languishing on the shelf as consumers around the globe reach for bottles from New World producers in the likes of Chile, Australia and South Africa. "

This is true. They make good wine at a good price. Chile has good worldwide trade relations, for sure.

Then a paragraph below the frogs say, "When the Chinese really get into wine, demand for our product is going to explode to the point where if we cut back today, we might not be able to fill it,".

What, you think Chile, Australia, South Africa, USA won't sell to the ChiComs?

Certainly the boycott in the U.S. added to the troubles.

The boycott had the unforseen effect of getting lots of Americans to realize that there are many and many better wines out there.
I doubt many view their "non-purchase" of French wines as much of a sacrifice anymore.

I was in France last year at this time when the Beaujolais wine was marketed. The bottle we had at lunch wasn't very good wine! The French people I was eating with conceded that Beaujolais is more of a marketing strategy than a good wine.

For those not familiar with it, Beaujolais is released on one day in late November every year. It is done with great fan fair. There are posters all over the cities and restaurants announcing the vintage. The producers seal containers and ship to other countries with everyone getting their first taste on the same day. That is supposed to be the "hook".
