Iran says they have video shot by an unmanned drone showing a US aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

Iran’s Arabic language television station broadcast footage it claimed showed a US aircraft carrier cruising in Gulf waters it said was taken by an unmanned Iranian drone.

The brief minute-long film, which was shown on Al-Alam television’s evening news bulletin, showed wobbly aerial footage of an aircraft carrier stacked with war planes as it sailed.

The television’s anchor said the film, the property of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard, showed a vessel from “the US fleet in the Persian Gulf”.

“A source in the Revolutionary Guard said the drone carried out its mission without US fighter pilots reaching it,” the television said.

Here’s the photo. (Hat tip: Village Idiot’s Apprentice.)

I saw the news this morning, and found it very hard to believe they could get anything remotely close.

I think it's true. It traveled from the 14th century (i.e. Iran) into the modern 21st century world. Pretty impressive, I think it's actually a magic carpet.

1) I think it is probably real.

2) It is completely unremarkable that the Iranians were able to capture this footage if our carrier is operating in restricted waters such as the Persian Gulf.

“A source in the Revolutionary Guard said the drone carried out its mission without US fighter pilots reaching it wanting to waste time or fuel on it,” the television said.

Fixed it.

Would you say that we would allow small aircraft to get close to one of our carriers in waters like this? After the cole, I'd think that we'd be hot to trot when anything got close.

Well, those aren't F-14s on the bow. First, F-14's aren't ever parked up there. Second they show noticeable daylight between the wings and empenage. Something you never see on a parked F-14.

There is nothing to prevent a flyover if not at war. The Soviets did it all the time, as do we.

I think it's "Pukin" without the G, Grampa. Unless there's another heaving spaniel on the board that I'm unaware of! :-)

We'd "escort" it. With a 20mm about 20ft off its tail.

Looks like FA-18s and an E2C on the deck. FA-18 wings are short with a straight edge. F14 wings are longer and swept at 120 on deck, 168 degrees in fairly rapid flight e.g. re-entering the pattern at Miramar as I observed them for 17 years.

Aren't F-14's being phased out of carrier duty?

Well, you'd be wrong...

We're not going to go lighting up all of our radars and launching million dollar missiles at a photo-recon drone. It's not like our presence there is a big secret, anyway.
