Thanks for sharing that piece - I had not seen it since about 1996 (at the Convention that year). Newt Gingrich is one of those people whose influence will be felt long after he has passed from the scene. He was treated viciously by the news media - and I do mean viciously. A brilliant and thoughtful man, Gingrich was widely reviled by the popular media (then largely unchallenged) as a monster, an act for which I have never forgiven - and will never forgive the national news media. What they did to Reagan was bad enough - but the man was so much larger than life that he overcame it by simply smiling and maintaining his infectious, cheery optimism. Newt is more of a scholar, and given to a scholars' temperament - he does not suffer fools gladly.

A new Contract with America, or something akin to it would be great place to start. Republicans generally, and Conservatives specifically need to convene for the purpose of drafting a course of action. Given the usual time it takes for such a movement to coalesce, and given the stakes in this dangerous world, I say: the sooner, the better.

Well, Morris' prognostications aren't the most reliable...
but my great fear is that a year from now, we'll see Dubya as
an accomplice, not a roadblock, to Pelosi and Co.

If that happens, look for disillusionment to really riddle the

I'd say the economy stalls. Gas will be 3 bucks a gallon and we will have Waxman and Rangel out investigating who got the contract for the dishwashing soap in the Whitehouse kitchen. One thing Dick does'nt get is the Dems stood for nothing and still do. They have no ideas and never did. Unfortunately the Pubbies did'nt either. When a 2 of the big three automakers are in bankruptcy and interest rates are at 8 percent and we have a real crisis the Dems and there MSM allies will have a hard time spinning. I expect that the Dems will take a huge beating in '08 and the John Stewarts of the world wil be back to making fun of Brittney Spear's 3rd husband to his shrinking .2 share of the television audience. Then you can sneer at your liberal neighbor and make fun of them.

Howie always cheers me up all by himself. I listen to him on my drive home (and sometimes for a while thereafter). I can't even see a picture of Ted Kennedy without instantly hearing two sounds in my head: a beer being opened and poured, and "Hello?? Hello??" Puts a smile on my face every time.

Cheer up, though. It's going to be a bumpy ride, but I remember the last time we were on the outside looking in, and it was invigorating and exciting to be the ones with the new ideas. Just remember - the Democrats won by default - they do not have ANY ideas, they just were not Republicans, and this year - that was good enough. Soon, it won't be. As much as I loved Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill is my personal hero. I smoke cigars and drink whiskey copiously, which is why (in Churchill's own words), "I am always in 200 percent form". There is a special room in Heaven for both of those gentlemen (I am certain) and I should be content to live my life in such a manner that my ultimate reward would include even a fleeting glimpse of those two great and noble men.

Very doable, especially in a presidential election year.

In 2004, the Dems had a record turnout, and we still beat them easily. We can do this again with the right nominee, and solid conservative congressional candidates.

I wish that were the case, but the democrats have the momentum on their sides.

With 2008 being an presidential election, all I can say is be prepared. I am of the opinion that we lost because we don't know how to lead. If so, how can we win again in the near future. Just being honest. The republican leadership is made up of cowards that don't know how to push their agenda forward, not use the bully pulpit to take the opposition to the woodshed.
