The Republicans have already driven off their libertarian core, thus guaranteeing yesterday's fiasco, by their own antics (drunken-sailor spending, the Schiavo circus). Thus, the Democrats didn't need to lift a finger -- when you enemy is self-destructing, just kick back and pop some corn.

When the Republican party starts realizing that the libertarian part of the 'base' is just as potentially solid and deserves a place at the table as much as the Judeo-Christian culture warriors they might do a little bit better.

Hopefully, yesterday's clue-by-four to the skull will lead to that realization. If so, they may recover a bit in 2008. If not... well, the Federalists are no more, the Whigs are no more, and there is no law of history that prevents the Republicans from following in their footsteps.
