Projectile Scores a Direct Hit Against Moving T-72 Tank(new Abrams round)

Tucson AZ: Raytheon successfully conducted the first beyond line of sight mission with a test firing of its Mid Range Munition Chemical Energy (MRM-CE) guided projectile with digital semi active laser sensor. The projectile, fired from an Abrams M1A2 SEP (system enhancement program) tank, scored an extended-range, guided direct hit.

The test firing at the U.S. Army's Yuma, Ariz., Proving Grounds demonstrated the laser-guided seeker's ability to successfully target, acquire and track a moving tank and guide the munition to intercept at a distance of 5.4 miles (8.7 km).

"The round hit within inches of the aim point demonstrating 100 percent mission success. The MRM-CE 'One Team' concept uniting the Army's Picatinny Arsenal, General Dynamics Ordnance Tactical Systems and Raytheon is at the core of our success," said Rick Williams, Raytheon Missile Systems' MRM program manager.

The Raytheon MRM-CE projectile is designed to provide the Army with lethal, one-shot capability as it continues its transformation to lighter, more deployable combat forces. The MRM-CE, which will autonomously attack battlefield targets at beyond line of sight ranges, with or without external laser target designation, is a key component of the Army's Future Combat Systems vehicles.

"The MRM-CE continues to perform consistently and accurately and is ready to enter system development and demonstration," said Ken Pedersen, Raytheon Missile Systems' vice president of Advanced Programs.

The MRM-CE program is jointly developed and managed by Army Research and Development Command and the Project Manager -- Maneuver Ammunition Systems at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J.

Nope. best western tank is Leo-2, Vhallenger is junk.

During testing for Oman army, Challenger-2 just broke. they couldnt find how the sans are getting into engine. And than they got is. sand isnt just sand... Onanian (rabian peninsula) sand is much smaller and gout with ease trough filter. Challenger-2 was testen in Africa and african sand is larger.

Second M-1 hade sucess just in combat with undertrain Iraqi T-55 and T-72s, and in condition of overvelming air superiority.

If he wants to get technical we could just have predator and global hawk drones on the battlefield(which we already do) with hellfire 2 missiles and annihilate any russian tanks. The M1A2 sep would deafeat the T-90 though.

This is all so unfair! The US Army has too many accurate weapons systems already. This puts them at an unfair advantage over less advanced and capable enemies!

Probably you are right.

but in the other hand there would be Su-35s and MiG-29SMTs on the sky and also a lot of Su-25 and Su-39s and some Mi-24s, Mi-28s.....

Never underestimate the enemy.

The Future Combat Systems platform will be an awesome system that allows a small force to control vast areas of territory.

I recall an old joke about a Japanese task force that wants to take an island in the Pacific. No big deal -- intelligence indicates there's just a single US Marine on the island. Small Japanese forces go in, but they get wiped out. Larger forces storm the beaches. No survivors. Finally, an all-out assault is staged -- and one Japanese survivor staggers out of the jungle and makes it back to the ship. The Japanese Commander asks: "What's the situation?" The soldier gasps out: "There are two of them!"

"Hitting mouving tarbeg with tank gun isnt something as achievent,..."

To heck it isn't! The only tarbegs I was ever able to hit with a tank gun were stationary. Those moving tarbegs are really hard to hit!

"M-1 is obsolete and USA needs something new. "

Perhaps, but it's still the badest boy on the block.

"And another thing, why US army is allways comparing its best weapons with Russian 20 or 30 years old weapons?"

The T72 was not being compared with the M1A2. the T72 was used as a proof of concept target. nothing more.

:)
Oh, it is so simple and great to read tank gun manual saying "one shot hit probability 80%"

and just fiering rifle and hitting mouving target is so hard, but on battlefield when that other guy and his pals want to hit you to, even more hard!

I allways wanted to get hold on a morone that writes technical manuals...

"When you get enemy in range of your rifle, allways remember that you got into his rifles range too!"

And all of the "I'll stay home before I vote for XYZ Republican", consider the possibility of such a scenario...

You're correct GOP leadership should consider that possibility.
Nominating a RINO who creates a "stay home" situation would be their fault not
that of the individuals who would have voted GOP if offered an actual choice.

And another thing, why US army is allways comparing its best weapons with Russian 20 or 30 years old weapons?

Maybe because the Russians never field very many of their very latest weapons systems? Maybe because the T-90 has never seen combat, and until it does it's all just smoke & mirrors?

The M1 had a lot of teething problems when it first entered service. It took years to iron-out most of them before Desert Storm proved it worked as advertised. And that was with a professional military, not a large conscript force of short-timers at the controls.

The T-90 may be a good tank. But we'll all have to wait & see.

Ha! Good one.

We had a Marine, a colonel I think, come in and describe how he used our company's laser rangefinder to direct air support to take out about a thousand taliban in the earliest fighting in Afganistan. The enemy had them surrounded, their were literally only about a dozen marines, and they kept marking the ememy's positions and the F-18s would come in and blow them away. He said the rangefinders literally saved all of their lives as they thought they were doomed.

He and his men were very grateful and came to the company to say "thanks."

I keep a pet tarbeg in my basement ... it's a relative of the womp-rat. It's kind of cute, and I've grown rather fond of it.

Please don't shoot it!

Another thing to consider: tanks are not necessarily your first option when the task is killing other tanks. Therefore, a straight-up qualitative comparison of opposing tanks will not necessarily tell you who will win -- and winning is all that counts.

I would much prefer it if I could hold/delay my opponent's armor with non-tank assets while my tanks cut into his flank & shoot up his logistical base.

The prime ferinstance is Giuliani. His only redeeming feature is that he is tough on crime and presumably tough on terrorists. His defense posture might be great but he would leave nothing to defend. Christians and those concerned about the 2nd amendment and folks who are not ready for a homosexual society will not be able to muster a whole lot of excitement for Giuliani. I think Giuliani is the one prominent Republican who would guarantee the election of a President Mrs.Clinton.
