WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sixty percent of Americans oppose the U.S. war in Iraq, the highest number since polling on the subject began with the commencement of the war in March 2003, according to poll results and trends released Wednesday.
And a majority of poll respondents said they would support the withdrawal of at least some U.S. troops by the end of the year, according to results from the Opinion Research Corporation poll conducted last week on behalf of CNN. The corporation polled 1,047 adult Americans by telephone.
According to trends, the number of poll respondents who said they did not support the Iraq war has steadily risen as the war stretched into a second and then a third year. In the most recent poll, 36 percent said they were in favor of the war -- half of the peak of 72 percent who said they were in favor of the war as it began.
Sixty-one percent, however, said they believed at least some U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of the year. Of those, 26 percent said they would favor the withdrawal of all troops, while 35 percent said not all troops should be withdrawn. Another 34 percent said they believed the current level of troops in Iraq should be maintained.
Asked about a timetable for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, 57 percent of poll respondents said they supported the setting of such a timetable, while 40 percent did not and 4 percent had no opinion. Only half the sample, or about 524 people, was asked the timetable question.
The Bush administration has maintained that setting a timetable or deadline for withdrawal would only help terrorists.
Americans were nearly evenly split on whether the U.S. would win the war in Iraq.

Yes I trust these numbers... :p
Who the he** believes this? Just another trumped up poll.
Where did they do this poll? DU and Kos?
"The corporation polled 1,047 adult Americans by telephone"
Still don't see how you can conclude from 1,000 what 200 Million think.
We're so full of sh*t we can't think straight.
Bravo Sierra.
And yet...and yet...in a blue blue state, a pro war democrap lost to an antiwar democrap by 52% to 48%. Ya sure, that poll is right...
Once again, the old Vietnam "hawk/dove" dichotomy in which all who disagree with the tactics are labeled "doves," even though HALF of them want a MORE AGGRESSIVE pursuit of military victory. I guarantee if you break down those "opposed" numbers, you'll find half of them only "oppose" it because they think we should be doing MORE to win, such as dealing with Iran and Syria.
"In the most recent poll, 36 percent said they were in favor of the war -- half of the peak of 72 percent who said they were in favor of the war as it began."
Then.. "Sixty-one percent, however, said they believed at least some U.S. troops should be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of the year."
But the headline reads "60 percent of Americans oppose Iraq war"
Those are responses to two different questions. Media mischief.
I'm sure a lot has changed in the last 24 hrs.
Sadly, we are gonna have to take another hard hit for them to get woke up again. I hope the next one is not as bad as 9/11. It very well may be a lot worse.
Should demand CNN reveal the actual results.
The question about pull out of some troops is posed as a response to another question whether one "supports" the war.
All questions and results should be revealed.
Nevertheless, CNN has created a "60%" meme that will be repeated endlessly. This will be good for Republicans because the Dems will press the Iraq issue for local elections.
That poll was prior to todays events. It is a whole different ball game now.
People are tired of the length of the war so far.
They don't feel the benefit of having moved Saddam out of there.
They are not so sure the Iraqi people deserved our efforts when you look at the type of government they want to have.
There was WMD found, but not on the scale people expected, though it could have been moved to Syria.
And just how did they word this poll? LOL
Yeah, I believe it. sarcasm
"In the most recent poll, 36 percent said they were in favor of the war -- half of the peak of 72 percent who said they were in favor of the war as it began."
This does not tell us how many said they weren't in favor. Or are "unsure" or something else.
I wonder how those same people would answer today?
