Metro OG&E Customers Report Outages In Moore, Norman

POSTED: 3:54 pm CDT August 9, 2006
UPDATED: 6:31 pm CDT August 9, 2006
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Almost 4,000 electricity customers were without power on Wednesday afternoon across central Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma Gas & Electric Web site.

As of 4 p.m., OG&E's System Watch electric-service outage monitor indicated 3,147 customers were without power in Moore and 658 were without power in Norman. As of 6 p.m., officials at the scene said about 2,400 customers were still without power.

Investigators said they believe people trying to steal copper wire could be to blame for the outages.

It should also be noted that it was over 100 in most parts of Oklahoma yesterday--106 on our thermometer. Click the link, and there is a video of the report for even more details. This one says half a million dollars, another one said about a million dollars in damages, for what--$50 or so worth of copper?

Hanging by thumbs seems an appropriate punishment.

Think of the money being saved not using the AC. But of course, you might die.

Blackout blamed on cut wire

The Oklahoman

MOORE - Authorities are blaming would-be copper thieves for a Wednesday afternoon blackout that left thousands of customers without power.

The break-in happened Wednesday at an Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. power substation in Moore, company spokesman Brian Alford said.

Copper wiring was cut, Alford said, which shut off power to about 3,800 customers in Moore and about 1,700 in Norman. Alford said it wasn't clear Wednesday afternoon whether any copper actually was taken. Police were investigating.

Alford said the substation carries thousands of volts of electricity.

"What they did was extremely dangerous," Alford said. "There was more than enough electricity there to be deadly."

Power crews were making repairs to the substation late Wednesday, and Alford said power was restored by 7 p.m.

Amazingly, no one was electrocuted, or if they were, they've hidden the body somewhere. Really, really stupid stunt.

This activity has gone on for years all over the US. In 1989 I toured an old substation near downtown Houston. Thieves had been "mining" it by taking fireman axes and cutting out old paper and cloth insulated copper cables of abandonded-in-place circuits. They were caught after they tried one that wasn't abandonded. IIRC, there was a body to be recovered. The floor was littered with little chips of copper from the chopping.

In light of the way things are today, it was also instructive as to how easy it would be to disable everything in a wide area, if a terrorist were so inclined. Evidently, no one's watching these places.

What makes you say that? You should try to get to the North Slope sometime. It is a hassle for those of us who only visit occasionally.

Sorry to be like this, lol, but I'm skimming all the posts from today and I had Norman in the "pool" for where the next Egyptians might pop up.

First there was a cell phone outage all over Queens in NYC, then I saw "power outage for OG&E customers" and I thought "bingo!"

But *sigh* this was yesterday - and no Egyptians and no London terrorists or even Ohio terrorists.

YET!

Well, I'm absolutely certain I have never made an error in posting. Well, not since this morning anyway. ;)

I think this one was just a tripped-out meth-head. But yeah, and you probably noticed that they're saying the UK group were using the same kind of explosive material as the "suicide" in Norman.

Yup - and like our "boys will be boys" apartment explosion down here a couple of weeks ago.
