Last time I checked, the President is not a King. If President Bush doesn't have a problem with it, why should I?
I think the etiquette guides all say that one should never decline a White House invitation to a state dinner. I'm not so sure that it applies to any invitation to do anything from the White House (an invitation to Joe's Crab in Miami). Of course, it's been many years since I remember reading something about this and have become much more uncouth (hence the name) since then.
If invited to dine with the President, I would accept.
If invited to dine with an old horndog who used to be President, no protocol is involved.
But as long as Hillary would be there to protect me, I'd go. You know Bill tells the best jokes.
The American obsession with ball games is pathetic. This self-absorbed coach should never have been invited to dine with the President. There are many hundreds of parents, spouses, and siblings of our military personnel who have been killed in action, as well as many military personnel who have been massively and irreparably wounded, who should all be much higher on the list for scarce invitations to dine with the President.
No Class
Ah. If he'd asked me when he was President, I would have accepted, since one does not decline White House invitations.
Of course, I'd have been one of 300 attendees, so I'm pretty sure I'd be safe.
Thank you!
Let's see what the propriety mavens say . . . ladies, proper or improper to decline a Presidential dinner invite?
You are correct, and I misread. I thought Saban had turned down a White House dinner, not a Joe's Crab Shack dinner.
So my comments about impropriety are interesting but irrelevant.
I'm backing off a bit since I am informed that he wasn't invited to dinner at the White House, but at a Miami restaurant.
In that case, I can concede the propriety of declining if need be, but me, I'd go.
Camp, at least in that organization, is more like a tune-up for the regular season. Not that they don't work hard, mind you, but they're expected to have gone a long way to getting the playbook down by camp. And woe be to any player who doesn't participate in Shanahan's off-season conditioning program and shows up to camp in less than top shape.
First time I've ever heard you quote Miss Manners. This could become an FR "Stune Your Beebers" moment. Check my tag line.
I've tried Shula's in two cities, and I have to say, not that great compared to Morton's, El Gaucho and Met Grill in Seattle, or Lowery's in Chicago. I wouldn't go back . . . (thread hijacking in progress)
Ah, you missed me on the Kobe threads! I was the one who was shocked at the "victim" showing up in court in a white skirt, black hose, and white shoes.
I am all about the propriety - of demeanor, decorum, and accessories. :)
As a Dolphins' and Bush fan, I say "good". Get to work, Nick.
OH HECK...ENUFF with the bickering!! I'll be more than happy to take Coach Saban's place anytime!! HEY, W my hubby and I would love to dine with you!! How about it?!! :)
I would never want to give up a chance of a lifetime, so I say go. Then again, I'm not into sports so what do I know?
Taste has nothing to do with it. He is the head coach of a professional team that is in go mode right now. As a man who used to be part owner of a baseball franchise Bush is likely to have understood Saban's decision.
I'll retract my propriety statement, since it wasn't in fact dinner AT the White House that Saban turned down.
I still think he missed the chance of a lifetime, though, and if I were his wife I'd probably give him a "What were you thinking?" arm smack.
He was likely thinking:
Who's going to be my starting running back?
Will Culpepper be able to do the job?
How's my depth at safety?
His wife will likely be demanding answers to these and other items.
Actually it was for Sunday night. Bottom line if you follow the NFL you know that all the teams started pre-season training camp late last week, NFL coaches are very busy, especially those that are new to the team.
