Republican insiders respond to these numbers by saying rank-and-file GOP voters will abandon Giuliani once they realize his position on abortion, gay rights and gun control.

No insider - but this is a "Duh!" statement of the highest magnitude.

Rudy and McManiac, for that matter, have NO chance. That's zero / zilch / nada!

How about Rudy in a number 2 slot behind a solid Conservative? I was kind of shocked that Rudy placed 2nd in the Repbs Georgia Straw Poll. Only native son Newt beat him. That may be just be name recognition and it may be not.

Hey Don-o....how about a little monetary bet on that with me? $50 says either Rudy or McCain gets the nomination.

True conservatives may not agree with Rudy's social positions, but it is wishful thinking to believe he has no chance. You look at any poll of Republicans only regarding 2008 and you find 70% of respondents name Rudy or McCain as their favorite. Do you really think those who want McCain would not vote for Rudy? I don't think so. The other 30 percent is probably not enough to be able to nominate a guy like Allen.

I'm with you. Republicans who think they can win without the religious right are deluding themselves. He's no different from Hillary on the issues that are most important to this powerful voting bloc.
