New York Times Buries King Prosecution Story

The New York Times buried a report that the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee was urging the Bush administration to seek criminal charges against the newspaper for reporting on a secret financial-monitoring program used to trace terrorists.

As NewsMax reported on Sunday, Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., blasted the Times’ decision last week to report that the Treasury Department was working with the CIA to examine messages within a massive international database of money-transfer records.

King’s call for a prosecution of the Times was a lead story on cable news shows, wire services like the Associated Press and major Internet sites like NewsMax.

Still, the Times on Monday decided to bury the story in an article about the National Security Agency’s wiretap program.

Under the headline "Court Review of Wiretaps May Be Near, Senator Says” – which gave no inkling of Rep. King’s attack – the Times finally introduced King on page A12 in the ninth paragraph of the story, saying he was "outraged” and had "called for a criminal investigation into the Times.” "I’m calling on the attorney general to begin a criminal investigation and prosecution of the New York Times, its reporters, the editors that worked on this and the publisher," the Times quoted Rep. King as saying.

But King had gone further in an earlier comment, declaring: "We're at war, and for the Times to release information about secret operations and methods is treasonous."

As NewsMax reported, King said he thought investigators should also examine reports by the Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times about the financial-monitoring program, but said the greater focus should be on the Times because of their previous reporting on a secret domestic wiretapping program.

In a letter to readers posted Sunday on the Times’ Web site, executive editor Bill Keller said that the newspaper and others in the press "have served the public interest” by reporting on secret programs designed to fight terrorism.

I'm not sure what I gained from learning about this program. But according to the Slimes, it outweighed what the terrorists would gain from learning about the program.

Served the public interest by reporting on tactics used in the war on terrorism? Oh I don't think so. I hope they have to go to court immediately! It's high damned time.

How would the NYT react to someone releasing the blue prints of their building and a complete description of their security procedures and how to defeat any security systems. After all, there is a first amendment right to publish it to the world.

The NYT editor screwed up. This story should've headlined the first page.

Would've done wonders for their circulation.

Since McKinney isn't going to be punished...and the old Grey ho has done this before and gotten away with it, I suspect that nothing will be done. This is only a country governed by law if you don't have any political clout. Otherwise, we are governed by men.

I don't care where they put it in their paper. The President is mad, and something just may happen here about this issue. I hope so.

The sniveling traitors deserve serious prosecution. Let's see if they can make this happen. This issue is going to gain steam as the New Media forces the old media to cover it. Keep pushing folks--these bastards deserve jail time.

The President is mad, true. However, Frist was just on Fox News with Bill Hemmer, and stated he doesn't believe a congressional investigation is warranted. Hemmer really pushed him on this but Frist stuck to his guns. Whoever determined this guy would make an effective Senate Majority Leader was very mistaken.

There will be the usual blather about the right of the public et al, et al. The MSM will protect iteself with cries and whines against that Facist Bush. Oh the humanity. AG Meese on Rush today thought it would be a case to see just how much the First and Second Amend. applies to a dangerous outlet with govt. secrets. I would love to see Frist and Hastart at least issue a resolution in Congress to chastise the Times on both coasts.

That is the best idea for a pajamahudeen op I have heard yet. Anyone know how to get this done?
