WASHINGTON -- The CIA's decision to fire a top intelligence analyst accused of leaking classified information became a political issue almost immediately after it became public last week.

The officer was a senior analyst nearing retirement, Mary O. McCarthy, who the agency said leaked information to news organizations about a secret network of CIA prisons.

McCarthy was once responsible for guarding some of the nation's most sensitive secrets as a senior aide for the National Security Council, The New York Times reported in today's editions, citing several current and former government officials.

In that role, McCarthy often focused on ways to prevent White House leaks of classified information and covert operations

Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr. said on the newspaper's website: ''We don't know the details of why [the CIA employee] was fired, so I can't comment on that. But as a general principle, obviously I am opposed to criminalizing the dissemination of government information to the press."

There should be no national security secrets, according to this scumbag Downie.

This woman is a professional. She knows more about intelligence than George Bush does. If she doesnt like what Bush does she has a duty as a Professional to run to the papers with secure information.
She was left there by Clinton to do exactly what she did,and she isnt alone there are others who will take her place. Clinton left his agents in every major Department in the government. Hell: Half the professionals in the State department are Clinton agents. Do you really believe that just because Republicans are in office the Democrats shouldnt be running things?

Does this need a sarcasm tag? Most of its true even if it is sarcasm.

The CIA as well as the State Department need to be purged of the political hacks left over from the Clinton administration. Doesn't the Hatch Act apply anymore? When I was a government employee years ago we were warned that under penalty of law we could not engage in any overt political activity.

Hey SgtBono,
Looks like that compassionate conservatism really pays dividends for President Bush.(sarcasm)

Leaving any former klintoon employee in a positon of trust at any agency, is opening "Pandora's Box."

Our POTUS is a good man, who continuosly thinks you can pet a viper without repurcussions.

When will he ever learn????????

I've just started reading about this. Has anybody picked up on her testimony before the 911 Commission? The two links below are both from the same dates, the first being her formal statement and the second Q&A. Also, while I have read she became a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in 2001 and it described as "a 4 year stint", she describes herself in her 2003 testimony (second link) as "a current CIA employee." So, she never actually terminated her government employment.

Perhaps President Bush has learned and this was the first false story to start smoking them out. Investigations continue. Move em out, top to bottom.

If this traitor Mary McCarthy has revealed classified information to Dana Priest at the Washington Post, how can anyone be sure that this Clintonista hasn't provided classified information to other entities who may be working as agents for al Qaeda or any other terrorist group?

Military tribunal. If convicted, save the bullets and hang the b*tch. This is wartime and she has betrayed America.

Typical of the Bush administration to do the right thing regardless of MSM outrage. I wonder if this behavior will be limited to the Bush administration or if it's really the end of MSM's power.
