Latinos divided on immigration issue
KVOA - Tucson ^ | April 10, 2006 09:17 AM | KVOA - Tucson

Contrary to scenes of hundreds of thousands of united Latinos marching across the country in support of immigration reform, a sizable number of the ethnic group opposes the marches and strongly objects to illegal immigration.

But their voices have largely been muffled by the massive protests, which will continue Monday as tens of thousands of demonstrators are expected to take to the streets of Tucson, Phoenix and other cities nationwide.

They are voicing their support of a Senate bill that would give an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants living in the country a chance for U.S. citizenship.

"That's the objective of the marches -- to give the impression that all Latinos are for allowing the illegals to become citizens," said Phoenix resident Lionel De La Rosa. "Well, I'm not."

The 71-year-old Texas native and Vietnam veteran said he favors punitive measures more in line with the immigration bill passed by the U.S. House in December that would have made it a felony to be in the United States illegally.

"I'm for that 100 percent," he said. "As far as my Latino friends are concerned, they all agree on this."

Almost half of Hispanic voters in California voted for Proposition 187 as well as majorities of black and Asian voters.

Ok, lemme get this straight. These people enter our country illegally, violating our immigration laws. Then they get bitched out at us for trying to do something about the problem by actually forcing them to take responsibility for their own illegal actions......yup, we're the problem, not them.....nevermind. We now return to your regularly scheduled broadcast..... /sarc

My brother-in-law is one of them. His parents immigrated legally from Mexico 50 years ago, and he's strongly against illegal immigration.

And why shouldn't he be? His parents went through proper channels to get their US citizenship. Why should these people be any different?

"Other Hispanics have told me to go to the demonstrations," said Orta, 55, who said her mother is from New Mexico and her father's family traces its roots to Spain. "I think it's hurting them. They're making a fool of themselves."

I'm counting on it.

The other day our local news reported that thousands of undocumented workers were protesting this border security legislation...then the news proceeded to bring a story about illegal dumping of toxic waste into a local stream.

I called them and suggested that they change the story to "undocumented dumping of toxic waste into the local stream" since the word applied so well to their first story.

Exactly because the issue is not hispanic vs non white, it is legal citizens vs illegal gate crashers.

Nice to see someone in the mainstream media finally point out that many Latinos don't agree with the open borders agenda.

I discuss this in detail in my chapter "The Myth of the Latino Vote" in

I don't expect that we'll see very much of it. Your book looks interesting. Good for you!

I'm in Dallas, where the big myth is that Latinos vote at all. I live in a largely Hispanic neighborhood near downtown. A few years ago, a Hispanic candidate for mayor was being touted as a real contender because he was going to attract that huge Latino vote. I told everyone, "It's not going to happen. I live among Hispanics, and I know them. They don't vote because most of them are very suspicious of the government, and they're not about to go hand over a lot of personal info to the vote registars, then voluntarily take time off work to show up at some government office on election day." Several of my liberal friends told me I didn't know what I was talking about. Came the election, and the Hispanic candidate came in a distant third, due to the "inexplicably low" Hispanic turnout.

It's bad enough when the media lie to us, but when they lie to themselves, it's just sad.

You bring out a good point in your opening comment. There are millions of people that came to this country through legal channels. Is it no wonder that, people illegally in this country, are not vested in this country, but seem to feel like the country should be vested in them.
