Bush Blames Reid on Immigration Bill
By JENNIFER LOVEN, Associated Press Writer 55 minutes ago
President Bush blamed Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid on Saturday for the potentially fatal blow dealt to compromise immigration legislation.
The landmark bill, which would offer eventual citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants, fell victim Friday to internal disputes in both parties.
But Bush echoing earlier complaints from Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. sought to place all the blame on Reid, D-Nev., who refused to permit votes on more than three Republican-backed amendments.
"I call on the Senate minority leader to end his blocking tactics and allow the Senate to do its work and pass a fair, effective immigration reform bill," Bush said in his weekly radio address.
Hailed as a bipartisan breakthrough earlier in the week, the immigration measure would have provided for stronger border security, regulated the future entry of foreign workers and created a complex new set of regulations for the estimated 11 million immigrants in the country illegally.
Officials said an estimated 9 million of them, those who could show they had been in the United States for more than two years, would eventually become eligible for citizenship under the proposal.
Faced with a major setback only months before much of the Republican-controlled Congress is up for re-election, Bush sought to give life to the issue. Speaking mostly to conservatives in his party, he said border security must be improved and enforcement within the United States needs to be enhanced.
But in a nod to business leaders who support temporary worker programs that would ensure an easy supply of low-cost labor, he spoke passionately about the need to put out the welcome mat for those from other countries.

The illegal invasion has concentrated the attention of Americans on the nature of democracy and its central bulwark against anarchy---our Constitution and the rule of law.
The arrogance of these illegal mental midgets---- lettuce pickers and hamburger flippers. These imbeciles actually believe wavng the Mexican flag in our faces helps their case.
Some lowlife drug lord actually told these morons that Americans are a bunch of suckers who cannot see past the smoke and mirrors, and that we would sit still for their abhorent immigration bill.
The druggies are hiding behind the backsides of vote-hungry US elected officials bandying about the bill that treats these lawbreakers better than law-abiding US citizens.
No one is impressed by this cadre of spineless marionettes dancing limply on the strings of corruption, manipulated by the unseen alien horde puppetmasters lurking behind the scenes, ready to pounce on US assets.

Bush Blames Reid on Immigration Bill I think Bush is wrong about this. Reid was an embarrassment to primates long before the Immigration Bill.

Again, Loven is married to a former Clintonite and DNC bigwig. Everything she writes should come with a warning label that this is pure DNC spin pretending to be "news". Reid and the insane clown posse wanted the original bill with ALL the enformcment amendments blocked. As bad a bill as this was the Democrats wanted ALL the enforcement items in the US House bill blocked. So while the DNC mouthpieces squeal about how the GOP is blaming Dems remember what a Democrat controlled Congress WOULD HAVE PASSED.

Can someone please explain to me how Reid can be the problem when Frist and Republicans have a 55/44/1 majority?

"sought to place all the blame on Reid, D-Nev., who refused to permit votes on more than three Republican-backed amendments. "
After reading this little tidbit, I was suitibly disgusted enough to post. Weather or not you agree with these bills, how in the hell does the minority get to decide on what gets voted on in the senate? What a pathetic wimp Frist is!!!!!!!!!!!

If Reid's actions, in fact, stopped that abomination, I'm not too proud to say thanks for the result. His motive, as usual, was something else.

great idea to introduce Reids 93 bill it sounding good to me however on C-Span the other day after Drudge posted his plan and Rush and Sean talked about his 1993 bill
HE WHINNED SO HARD on the Senate Floor I thought I was drunk he said he was sorry how he did this, his wife was mad at him and on and on he went I think in 1993 it was okay to feel illegals should be deported, etc etc but now it is not

Simple, stupid senate rules that allow the Dems to simply promise to filibuster anything. As soon as they say that, it blocks votes. Stupid "Can't we all get along" Senate rules. Hope the NEXT Senate has learned their lesson about expect Democrats to act like reasonable, responsible adults.

Bush is the one who kept pushing a bad bill. The Senate reacted to voter pressure. This is Bush's fault for pushing this horrid legislation, not Reid's.
