Prince Philip has broken a 60-year public silence about his family's links with the Nazis.
In a frank interview, he said they found Hitler's attempts to restore Germany's power and prestige 'attractive' and admitted they had 'inhibitions about the Jews'.
The revelations come in a book about German royalty kowtowing to the Nazis, which features photographs never published in the UK.
They include one of Philip aged 16 at the 1937 funeral of his elder sister Cecile, flanked by relatives in SS and Brownshirt uniforms.
One row back in the cortege in Darmstadt, western Germany, was his uncle, Lord Mountbatten, wearing a Royal Navy bicorn hat.
Another picture shows his youngest sister, Sophia, sitting opposite Hitler at the wedding of Hermann and Emmy Goering.
Explaining the attraction of the Nazis, 84-year-old Prince Philip told an American academic: "There was a great improvement in things like trains running on time and building. There was a sense of hope after the depressing chaos of the Weimar Republic.
"I can understand people latching on to something or somebody who appeared to be appealing to their patriotism and trying to get things going. You can understand how attractive it was."

He added that there was 'a lot of enthusiasm for the Nazis at the time, the economy was good, we were anti-Communist and who knew what was going to happen to the regime?'
Philip stressed that he was never 'conscious of anybody in the family actually expressing anti-Semitic views'. But he went on to say there were 'inhibitions about the Jews' and 'jealousy of their success'.
Philip was born Prince of Greece and Denmark on Corfu in 1921, the youngest of five children and the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. All four of his sisters married German princes and three - Sophie, Cecile and Margarita - became members of the Nazi party.
Sophia's husband, Prince Christoph of Hesse, became chief of Goering's secret intelligence service and they were frequent guests at Nazi functions.
Philip went on to fight with distinction for the Allies in the Second World War before marrying the young Princess Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became Queen. He served with the Royal Navy where, by 1945, he had risen to the rank of first lieutenant on a destroyer and was mentioned in despatches.
All of his sisters and brothers-inlaw are now dead but he keeps in contact with his German relatives.
His comments on the family's Nazi connections appear in Royals and the Reich, by Jonathan Petropoulos, to be published in Britain in May.
He entered Dartmouth Naval College in May 1939, as soon as he left school, and was serving at sea as Midshipman before the Battle of Britain began.

1937 was at least three years before the war officially started. Every single royal family in Europe had a connection back to the British royals. I don't see the issue here. This entire thing is a non-story. Royal protocol overrules common sense in every case...you must attend these funnerals...even if they were in communist Cuba.

How shocking! He attended the funeral of his sister in Germany before WWII and some Nazis were there.
She might be alot of things but that doesn't discredit the information she presented in The Royals. Unlike the liberals, we cannot take a knee-jerk reaction and discard information and ideas solely on the basis of who is the messenger. If the same material were presented by another author would it make it inherently different?

Well...that's what the Kennedys would like you to believe....History Channel ran a special on this about 10-12 years ago...evidence of the coverup looked persuasive....expunged from the NJ Courthouse records in the relevant county...as well as a quiet annullment by the Catholic Church...this was out there at the time he ran for Prez, but the monolithic MSM ignored it (of course)...

Trains run on time. Great. Nazi concentration camps, millions of Jews, Catholics, Gypsies, and countless others murdered, tortured, butchered, World War II,...well, we won't discuss that. Philip and the family did okay, and that's all that matters. There's something evil about endless privilege, when you get up in the morning and think you're better than everyone else...well, except that woman you married. Hubris.
OK. Respectfully, you are starting to sound like you ought to put 'Moonbat Alert' at the head of your posts.
First of all Hess died in prison (probably murdered by Russian guards to avoid his release) in 1987 at the age of 96 (or close to that).
If by 'release' you mean his reappearance for the Nurnberg trials, you will recall that he FAKED amnesia and mental illness as a defense strategy - it failed partly because he was observed laughing in the witness dock at some of Hermann Goering's self-serving, pompous testimony (seen the film clip).
Lastly, ANYONE WITH EYES can see that the Hess at Nurnberg is the same Rudolph Hess who is alongside Hitler in 1930s film clips - this WAS before CGI, you will recall.
As far as his family goes, they certainly DID recognize him.
Someday the mystery regarding his imprisoment will be cleared up when the Brits release the sealed files. Reasoned speculation is that Hess did indeed have contacts within the Royal community, and that the Lord he said he was trying to meet LIED to save his own a**. The official extent of this UK compromiser wing, and what Churchill knew about it will be known someday later on in this century...

Philip is right about the attraction of the Nazis. There was great improvement, a feeling of hope. The wolves feasted on Germany's almost dead corpse after WWI, and WWII was the result.

I do not know if Kitty is a "whore"; I DO know that she is a "Hitler-quality" paid slanderer who has hidden behind the overly-generous S. Ct. decisions that practically make the doctrine of libel/slander inapplicable to "public persons"...
