Oklahoma has been hit with a number of wildfires resulting in several firefighters being injured and people losing their homes.

Prayers would be very much appreciated for the injured and for the people facing the loss of their homes.

This is the latest info I have been able to find about Destry Horton. The paper in Chickasha won't be updated until Monday at 1:00. If anyone hears anything please post it where we can keep the thread updated.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A Chickasha firefighter critically injured battling a blaze in Stephens County earlier this month is fighting to stay alive.

The mother of firefighter Destry Horton says her son's arms were amputated this week and that he may also lose a foot. Jerri Thomas says her son remains in critical condition at the Integris Baptist Medical Center.

The 32-year-old Horton suffered burns to about 50 percent of his body when he was trapped by a wildfire March First near Duncan.

Deep in the night, we continue to pray for Destry...

Father, let them know they are not alone. I have seen Your miracles, even in a world of pain, and I know that You are God. Your Will *will* be done.

Latest update as of 1:00 03-13-06. Sounds as if they've taken the foot amputation off of the table now.

Mr. Horton definitely has the will and the fight to live. Prayers are continuing here.

Doctors offer little hope for Horton

Doctors have told the family of Destry Horton that his survival so far has been a miracle.

After a surgical procedure Tuesday, they have told the family that it will take another miracle for Horton to survive more than a few more days.

The 32-year old father of two young girls, underwent a surgery Tuesday where his arms were both amputated near the elbow.

At that time, much of the tissue which was damaged by the flames of last Wednesday’s wild fires near Duncan, was removed.

Unfortunately, that process left no skin to protect Horton’s chest or face.

Doctors have no way of covering Horton to protect him from infection. They believe it is now only a matter of time before Horton will fall victim to an infection which will take his life.

“We haven’t lost hope,” said Horton’s father-in-law Rockey Pittman. “But people really need to pray for Destry now. The doctors have said that unless God intervenes, nature will take its course.”

Horton is still on the ventilator and a dialysis machine. But no other life support machines are being used.

“He is really doing well, health-wise right now,” PIttman said. “But without any way to cover him, he is susceptible to infection and there isn’t much they can do for him.”

Pittman said the family is grateful for everything the people of Grady County and Oklahoma have done for them.

“I don’t know how to say thank you to everyone,” Pittman said. “We really appreciate all the prayers and support. We need the prayers now more than ever. We aren’t giving up until Destry gives up.”

Donations for Horton, and his partner, Larry Crabb Jr. who was also injured in the fire, are being accepted at all First National Bank of Chickasha branches.

The bank can also be found online at www.fnbchickasha.com.

Any update on Horton’s condition will be posted at the Express-Star web site at www.chickashanews.com.

Prayer to Saint Catherine of Siena

Dominican Tertiary and Doctor of the Church, you were full of wisdom, the special gift of God, and you knew how to guide even Pontiffs, as well as how to extinguish fiery passions and restore true peace among people. How inspiring your spiritual writings and how heroic your abstemious life! Fires are today unfortunately all too common - including those caused by criminals. Please protect and encourage firefighters in their heroic efforts to save lives.

Amen.

Destry Horton - 4 p.m., Monday, March 13

There haven’t been any significant changes in the condition of Chickasha firefighter Destry Horton since Friday’s update.

Horton, who was injured while working as a volunteer fighting wildfires near Duncan nine days ago, is still in critical condition although his vital signs are doing well. He is still successfully fighting off infection.

The 32-year old father of two young girls, underwent a surgery Tuesday where his arms were both amputated near the elbow. Much of the skin above his waist was destroyed by the flames. Doctors have told the family that this will eventually cost Horton his life. They say he is very likely to develop a deadly infection due to the lack of protection.

Horton is still sedated, but he has been conscious for brief periods since Friday. His wife, Brandy, has been able to communicate with him briefly. He can move his legs and shake his head slightly when he is less sedated.

His father-in-law, Rockey Pittman, said other experts will be brought in this week. They will try to develop a plan to help replace the skin he lost on his upper torso and face which could help him fight off infection. The family still has hope even though the doctors don’t know which direction to go to help him continue to recovery.

“We just need people to pray that they will find some answers,” Pittman said. “We are standing behind Destry and hoping and praying for him to continue getting better.

Oh how sad..... how very sad. God love him. He sounds like such a strong young man fighting to stay here with his wife and little ones.

We will pray that God's will be done and for mercy from suffering for him, his family, and his partner.

Hugs from a Family in Texas that cares deeply......

Please see the two updates from today. This man is finding such strength and it has to be from prayer. Please ping your prayer lists as against all odds he's fighting off infection which should have taken him already.

Yes, please pray for all the firefighters. They have such a hard, dangerous job right now. My son is one in the Texas panhandle and I talked briefly to him this afternoon before he got called back in after 5 hours of sleep in 36 hours. But he thinks things are changing for the better in the Pampa area right now. My prayers are with the injured firefighter, Destry Horton...

We are still here, and we are still praying. Tell his family to keep the faith - as long as Destry is still fighting to live, we will be on our knees before God, praying as Jesus taught us to pray:

Our Father, who art in Heaven
Hallowed be Thy Name
Thy kingdom come, they will be done
on earth, as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us -
lead us not into temptation, but deliver Destry from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever...
