The problem is that the type of people who own aggressive dogs tend to be gang members - lower income, minorities or people who do not value dogs as loved pets and keep them chained or strictly outside and are not socialized. These type of people are not going to obey these new laws they are trying to pass.

I believe you are wrong.

Any breed of dog can be aggressive, to the point of attack. The problem is not the dog, but the owner. Certain breeds require more discipline (rules, boundaries, and limitations, as Cesar says) but the norm is also for these breeds to be very intelligent and responsive to the proper attitude. AmStafs, German Shepherds, Dobermans, and Rotties are all wonderful dogs, but not for everybody.

You don't have to be a minority to be stupid, or to be a stupid dog owner. The world is full of them.

Yes you are right. Any dog has the ability to bite and can become aggressive. I was just generalizing. Not everyone is capable of handling any type of breed. As I mentioned in a reply - I have known aggressive labs. She was never allowed to roam or be lose around other dogs. My Shepard is very well trained but I would not trust him loose around other dogs. He is a dog and can be easily provoked. Even though my current lab is not aggressive at all I would never tell anyone she is not capable of biting another dog or human.

My whole point is that people need to be responsible for their pets and training them. We don't need laws to govern responsible behavior. I would never own a pit bull. My dog and I were attacked by one when I was 19 and jogging in the park. My dog was on a leash and I received 24 stitches and my dog lost his front leg. This happened in 1982, in Texas. The owner was never prosecuted. That dog should not have been loose and the owner should have had the dog destroyed knowing it was vicious. That would have been the responsible thing to do.

"AmStafs, German Shepherds, Dobermans, and Rotties are all wonderful dogs, but not for everybody."

Ay-Men!

I don't know how many times I would get folks p*ssed off with me because I refused to place a rescued Dobe in their house.

I would tell them that Dobes were good dogs, "but not a dog for everybody, and definitely not for you". It still amazes me that people take such great offense at that reality being pointed out to them.

Friends and family were the worst. Some still won't talk to me.

OTH, because I was so stubborn, I've turned around and placed some really HARD case dogs, the ones with two paws on the .38 and two on a banana peel, with great success for both the dog and the owners.

It aint the dogs, they're just dogs. Its the people who create the problems. And usually its ego that is the catalyst for the great amount of stupidity when dealing with dogs.
