Lafayette, Colorado is disguising BSL as Animals of Concern. 26 specific breeds are listed. Can you find yours?

Animals of Concern: means animals that based on factual studies, data, or identification by a recognized institute for breed behavior as having a propensity to be aggressive (6 traits) toward humans and domesticated animals; These animals have a higher risk of attack resulting in serious bodily injury and or death. They are identified as: “Pit Bull” for purposes of this chapter, is defined as any dog that is an American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one (1) or more of the above breeds, or any dog exhibiting those distinguishing characteristics which substantially conform to the standards established by the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club for any of the above breeds. Other Animals of Concern include; American Bulldog (Old Country Bulldog), Dogo Argentino, Canary Dog (Canary Island Dog, Presa Canario, Perro de Presa Canario), Presa Mallorquin (Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Ca de Bou), Tosa Inu (Tosa Fighting Dog, Japanese Fighting Dog, Japanese Mastiff), Cane Corso (Cane di Macellaio, Sicilian Branchiero), Fila Brasileiro, Boerboel, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Chow Chow, Wolf Hybrid, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Doberman Pinscher, St. Bernard, Great Dane or any dog displaying the majority of physical traits of any one (1) or more of the above breeds, or any dog exhibiting those distinguishing characteristics which substantially conform to the standards established by the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club for any of the above breeds.

My German Shepard was raised at the dog park and was fine until he reached 2 then he started being a bully - picking on the more timid dogs. He wouldn't attack them to kill them but he did break the skin of a beagle and I had him evaluated by a professional dog trainer and we agreed he was no longer a candidate for the dog park because he has a strong prey drive. He is very well trained and very gentle with kids and cats and gets along well with dogs who visit our house. So I am responsible and do not take him to the dog park and he is now in agility training. I only take my lab to the dog park now. But I did not need the government to tell me this! I'm happy to be able to do the right thing and govern myself.

We have come to a very sad place in this country. I watched on CNN last night (I sometimes like to watch the enemy propaganda machine) as a young man with "13 years of law enforcement experience" who looked like he was about 21 years old promoted the idea of total passiveness during holdups and robberies. I was appalled. I said to my wife and 19 year old daughter who were with me, don't listen to this bozo, watch for the key opening when a robber turns head, or focus' attention else where and than fight like hell.

Those are big yippy dogs. I mean BIG.

18-22 inches, 45-70 pounds...more like medium sized dogs and a propensity to get fat. Put that much hair on a medium-sized dog and it appears much larger. And I've seen some Chows that I know had to be considerably larger than standard. There was some guy that used to haul a couple of them around in the back of his full-size pickup...wasn't much room left back there.

Chow? Our Chow also made it to 17 before we had to put her to sleep.

That dog guarded our little kids like the Secret Service does the President. Her ears were up and her eyes followed their every move. Anybody or critter get too rough with the little ones and she would step in the middle and give the offender "the eye".

She suffered endless ear tugs and tail pulls in silence. She was used as a pillow and step stool every day for years. When it got too bad she would stand up, give the kids a lot and move out to another room.

She hated cats, squirrels and opossums. They entered our yard at their own peril.

The problem is that the type of people who own aggressive dogs tend to be gang members - lower income, minorities or people who do not value dogs as loved pets and keep them chained or strictly outside and are not socialized. These type of people are not going to obey these new laws they are trying to pass.

I believe you are wrong.

Any breed of dog can be aggressive, to the point of attack. The problem is not the dog, but the owner. Certain breeds require more discipline (rules, boundaries, and limitations, as Cesar says) but the norm is also for these breeds to be very intelligent and responsive to the proper attitude. AmStafs, German Shepherds, Dobermans, and Rotties are all wonderful dogs, but not for everybody.

You don't have to be a minority to be stupid, or to be a stupid dog owner. The world is full of them.

I would recommend you research the "breed" of the people pushing the ban.

Two animal rights groups joined forces a while back and have a $90 million war chest to push their radical agenda. They have publicly stated that they intent to target states, as their effort to push their wierd agenda failed in congress. Included in their agenda is the goal to ban ownership of all dogs.

I can guarantee you this is just the beginning. In 5 to 10 years that list will grow to twice or three times that size. Everytime a dog breed growls or snaps at a person it will be added to the list. It's the nature of the control freaks.

Look to see if there's Human Society of the United States money behind this effort. The people running this outfit are left wing, animal worshipping kooks.

My speculation is that HSUS is behind this ban, and this is only the beginning.

You are right-anyone who gets a dog and just tosses it out in the yard to be ignored shouldn't have a pet-if the animal isn't good enough to share someone's home and life, they don't need to own a pet.

Chows are vicious. They are kept by many as junk yard dogs.

Yes you are right. Any dog has the ability to bite and can become aggressive. I was just generalizing. Not everyone is capable of handling any type of breed. As I mentioned in a reply - I have known aggressive labs. She was never allowed to roam or be lose around other dogs. My Shepard is very well trained but I would not trust him loose around other dogs. He is a dog and can be easily provoked. Even though my current lab is not aggressive at all I would never tell anyone she is not capable of biting another dog or human.

My whole point is that people need to be responsible for their pets and training them. We don't need laws to govern responsible behavior. I would never own a pit bull. My dog and I were attacked by one when I was 19 and jogging in the park. My dog was on a leash and I received 24 stitches and my dog lost his front leg. This happened in 1982, in Texas. The owner was never prosecuted. That dog should not have been loose and the owner should have had the dog destroyed knowing it was vicious. That would have been the responsible thing to do.

They include German Shepherds, St. Bernards, and Great Danes as suspected vicious dogs. Put them in a cage such as they require, and almost any dog would become vicious!

I have known very good, friendly German Shepherds. Our daughter used to craw over her grandparents' Shepherd, pull its ears, jab her elbows into its sides as she crawled over it, and the dog would moan tolerantly, and acted very protective of our "puppy." Shepherds will defend the family, unike some politicians.

Great Danes (also on the list) are not especially vicious: just big. St. Bernards are very friendly, if properly trained.

Chows are a menace. I have never known a good one, but if you want to keep one, that is your business.

To understand this law, you have to know the town which passed it. Does anyone know the 2004 election results from there? I would be willing to bet ...

The fine in this county for a dog running loose is $500.00 per dog, per occurance. If the dog gets onto one of the many ranches out here and starts bothering livestock, it is a dead dog-if it escapes that fate, being eaten by a cougar or a pack of coyotes is still possible. Dogs are smart and easily distracted by 'coons and possums to try to get out of their yards, so most of us keep our dogs indoors when we are not there to watch them-my Husky is an escape artist extraordinaire, and so was our Chow. We haven't had a dog bite incident out here in the 3 years we've lived here, and this is a big county...
