Thanks, Mama.

The problem is based on someone who actually lied and quoted the President as saying something he didn't say.

Others believed him. Naive, I'd say....

Great speech last night, eh?

She was wearing an anti-war protest shirt. It's against Congressional dress code rules to be wearing a shirt that purports to send a message, whether it's a "support the troops" shirt or an "anti-war" shirt. This rule covers both members of Congress and their guests.

Yes it is pointless.

You and I both heard the word 'immigrant'. If you really think he was speaking about legal ones then it is definitely pointless.

Great speech last night, eh?

77% of the American people polled by CBS News approved of his speech last night!

"I hope you have been told repeatedly, arasina, that he most definitely did NOT say what Hyper said he said."

A private freepmail saying as much would have been more appropriate, OWF instead of singling out and embarrassing a fine Freeper as though she was a noob.

With over 2,500 posts at the time, do you think everyone is proof-reading exact quotes verbatim??

He was.

... We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy -- even though this economy could not function without them. (Applause.) All these are forms of economic retreat, and they lead in the same direction -- toward a stagnant and second-rate economy.

Tonight I will set out a better path: an agenda for a nation that competes with confidence; an agenda that will raise standards of living and generate new jobs. Americans should not fear our economic future, because we intend to shape it.

We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy -- even though this economy could not function without them.

Those are his words.

Which set of immigrants are we having a problem with, legal or illegal? I would say the legal immigrants are doing it as it should be done and are contributing to our country by paying into our economical system. The illegal ones are not. Now which one would Americans choose to say that were bad for the economy? When last I heard we had tens of millions of illegals here doing jobs Americans won't do.

Why would he make a statement about a group of immigrants that were helping our economy? I interrupted his comment to be focused on the illegal immigrants since those are the groups that are hurting our infrastructure. No one is suggesting that legal immigrants be thrown out of the country, they aren't the problem.

Wow! Calling for the line-item veto!!

Yep. He's never had the line-item veto, despite all this talk about him pandering to the left all the time, by the FR unappeasables.

I completely agree that arasina is a fine freeper, and a friend.

But her words were large and obvious, and were quoting someone who was lying.

I think she understood my point. I hope you do too.

Disagreement with the President is fine and fully appropriate. But lying about what he said, and putting it in quotes is NOT.

That's what Hyper-whatever had done.

If I offended arasina, I apologize. That was not my intent at all.

Yep. And CBS is trying to pretend it doesn't mean anything.

The left is getting more and more desperate..........and it is a JOY to behold! ;)

But, will she even serve one day? I'm not putting too much hope that she will. A year in the hoosegow would do us a great public service. An entire year without seeing her face or hearing her voice.

i'm going to defend what i said...

even though i took his words out of context( and i was wrong to do so), the meaning is still the same.

When he said immigrants, he meant illegal aliens.

"America can't survive without illegal aliens. " ...came out of his mouth...not mine

You put YOUR words in HIS quote. That's lying.

Please apologize for that, and then move on to your discussion about HOW YOU INTERPRETTED what he said.

Facts are important, and if you play around with them, they become lies.

Your views on illegal immigration are shared by many on this forum.. Your interpolating your personal opinion about what the President said into a quote, and then calling it fact is inappropriate and dishonest.

Because that's not what President Bush is implying. You're too focused on one single word, despite the fact I quoted two paragraphs from the speech itself.

"What about illegal immigration? There is no doubt that the issue of illegal immigration concerns Americans greatly; much more than it seems to concern the political class. Bush had no choice but to address the issue last night, but there was nothing new. Bush said "We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy." Really? Who said that? I haven't heard those claims. I've heard people complain that illegal immigration was bad, not to mention dangerous; but I haven't heard people just saying that immigration is bad. So, here we have George Bush trying to paint our concerns over illegal aliens as a general opposition to immigration. To be fair, the President did say that we need stronger immigration enforcement and border protection .. but he tied that to a guest worker program that rejects amnesty. What's that again? A "guest worker program that rejects amnesty?" Does this mean that everyone who is here now illegally will be rounded up and sent back? No, it doesn't. It means they'll be legitimized. They'll be rewarded for their illegal actions. They'll be absolved of any criminal wrongdoing and allowed to stay. That's not amnesty? The reality is that Bush is pushing a guest worker program that includes, not rejects amnesty. "

Where in that statement did he point out that he was speaking of legal immigrants? No one has a problem with legal immigrants. I'm bad mouthing the damage the illegal ones are causing. Since he didn't differentiate between the two groups, I had to decide which group he was referring to when he made the statement about 'immigrants are somehow bad for the economy'. If the legal ones are not a problem for our economy, why would he mention them? Since he did mention the word 'immigrant' my logical conclusion would be that he wasn't speaking about the legal ones, only illegal.

Then you are standing by a lie.

That's not wise.

You are free to voice your opinion about illegal immigration.

You are NOT free to lie about what the President said.

Please apologize for the deceit and then move on to make your points.
