Today was the long-anticipated status hearing on guardianship for Scott. 

The hearing took place in judge's chambers with Pamela and her attorneys and Eliza and her attorneys.  Pamela presented the judge with information that she has now filed with the court to have Scott declared "partially capacitated".  This means, at the very least, that he would then be allowed to indicate his preferences for his social environment, such as who is allowed to visit.  He has repeatedly indicated that he does not want to see Eliza, but he does wants to see his son.  

Pamela also informed the judge that, after Scott is legally determined to be "partially capacitated",  they would be filing for a divorce for him.  [emphasis mine]

  Eliza indicated to the judge that she would fight any divorce proceedings. 

The final item that Pamela presented to the judge is that Scott is scheduled for surgery to close his tracheotomy opening, which should allow him to regain his ability to speak and make sound. 

Based on all the above information, Judge Wilkes ruled to grant Pamela another six months of full guardianship of Scott.  This will be a crucial time for Pamela and Scott, as they continue to work, not only for Scott's recovery, but for him to regain the right and ability to truly "speak for himself".

A stunner last night on CNN Headline news: When CNN reported the wedding, they called Terri's case a "right to life" case.

Do you know how huge that one statement was? Terri's situation is almost always wrongly termed a "right to die" case, even on Fox.

On the anniversary of Terri's death which is March 31, 2006, events are being organized across the world. It doesn't matter if you have a small or large get together or if you simply have a moment of silence to remember Terri.

Shark Jumping in Pottsylvania
An FR Novella in Three Fits, a Start, and a Conniption
(Test-whump-whump Is this thing on? Test) The lights are way down low at Wampus's Florida Room Bar and Grill tonight. It's the blackout. We gotta do this blackout thing every night since the takeover by Pottsylvania. Never know where the eyes of Fearless Leader are. Everything has changed since the day Pottsylvania took over. Who knew they'd do it with a leveraged buyout? So tonight it's just me, a shark, and The Last Freeper sitting at a bar.

The shark is babbling about how everything jumps him sooner or later. TV shows, people, political parties, whole nations, planets - whatever, they all jump him. So I say to the shark, "Hey, shark, you have a tinfoil hat on your head!" "Yeah, tinfoil hat! Ha ha! That's a good one, Wampus, you showed him! Tinfoil!", says The Last Freeper.

"It's not a tinfoil hat", the shark explained. "It used to be called a Thinking Cap, but years of political correctness plus pseudo-liberal propaganda and pseudo-conservative propaganda force you to call it a tinfoil hat. Saying 'tinfoil hat' is now a thought stopper for those who fear Thoughtcrime."

I was either dumbfounded or found dumb, but managed to say, "Damn! You're right". The Last Freeper squeezed his shotglass until it shattered and then growled, "Damn! You're right!" So I say to the shark, "What's that Thinking Cap of yours teaching you?"

"Wellllllll....", he said with a huge, toothy smile, "I can tell you, but I have to use hushed tones, and then really really hushed tones."

<hushed tones>In Weimar, the Chancellor was given unchecked power, and it was all done within the law. Whenever he wanted something he could trot out a lawyer, and then a judge, to rule that the unconscionable was perfectly legal, and reassure the public that the Chancellor needed to do the unconscionable because of the emergency. To solve the emergency people were disappeared, tortured, and killed; and everyone was spied on. When the Reichstag said, 'Don't do that', he said, 'I will if I want to', and a judge rubber stamped his decision. Dissent was disloyalty, and everyone cheered. Thus did totalitarianism arrive all perfectly legal. At all times, Weimar was a nation of laws. Officially, that is. The judges said so. The first thing they got was forced euthanasia. Lenin was right when he said America would never buy International Socialism - Communism - if you called it that, but might buy it if you called it liberalism: and began long term infiltration based on that premise. Though the Pottsylvanians were but a cartoon version of the Bolsheviks, the evil but very sharp Boris and Natasha knew the real impediment was that Americans wouldn't accept total regimentation if the government seized the economy and all property. They also knew the real goal was totalitarianism regardless of the brand of Socialism. So they switched to the other brand - National Socialism, where economic interests buy out the government and turn it into their enforcement arm, as totalitarian as needed to ensure their consolidation of GreedPower ® The people get a semblance of having something while squeezed into peasantry. That's enough to make them buy it. They set out to turn America into a cartoon version of Weimar. The big money bought the best PR and Congress it could buy, some Fearless Leader clones were propped up here and there, and the judges were all issued rubber stamps in place of gavels. And instead of calling themselves National Socialists, or International Socialists, or any kind of Socialists at all,<really really hushed tones> they called themselves neocons. </really really hushed tones> It worked. The Pottsylvanians rule now, and the first thing we got was forced euthanasia, just like Weimar. All the rest is following close behind, just like Weimar. All that other stuff might already be here. Mind you, it'll all be very legal, and we'll still be a nation of laws, because the judges will say so. Day by day you'll find that everywhere you go you're treated as a suspect of something, everything you say is samizdat, and your life takes on the feel of an underground newspaper.

Don't run to the Democrats about it. Don't run to the Republicans either. When was the last time that worked? I can't remember either. Euthanasia, immigration, NAFTA-CAFTA-FTAA-WTO, outsourcing, eminent domain ... how many of them did anything about it? Maybe you heard an insincere little peep, but that was all. Why? Because the politicians of both parties were the first ones the Pottsylvanians bought, and they sold themselves cheap." </hushed tones>

The shark chugged a fifth of VO, burped, and looked at us. "We're screwed! We're screwed!", yelled The Last Freeper while banging his head on the bar. I was bouncing around the room like a crazed wampus cat after one too many twelve packs and no restroom within ten miles. "Yeah, we're screwed", I said. "What are we gonna do?" Staggering to his fins the shark said, "I'm going for a swim. It would do you good, too. If you're underwater the Pottsylvanians will discount you, and you can delay the day you'll have to jump me. And don't worry about me biting you. You already act like some kind of sleazy, boozy redneck lawyer anyway, and that's good enough for me. So how about it?" "Yeah, shark, I'm in", I said.

"OK then", said the shark, "but first take a look through these special sunglasses. They've got Hoffman Lenses. It'll feel like a knife twisting in your skull --- but they'll let you see. Go ahead, Wampus, you're in a cybernetic holographic forum anyway, so they'll work". So I put on the Hoffman Lenses and looked around. Terri's Freepers looked the same as they always had. "You know", I said to the shark, "they're the reason this bar and grill is open." I saw a few more people, scattered here and there, who still looked the same. But then I saw a big crowd of people who had become strangely distorted, all getting off on all the evil things that had plagued Weimar and had been imported here by the Pottsylvanians. Reveling in them, laughing about them, patting each other on the back about their complicity in the takeover. And those billboards I thought were their patriotic signs were only posters of the leering Boris, Natasha and Fearless Leader.

Very quietly I handed the Hoffman Lenses back to the shark. "I've seen enough, shark. Let's do it. Will The Last Freeper please turn off the lights?"

"You got it, Wampus, ol' pal, ol' bud, and I'll be joining you soon enough", said The Last Freeper. "But what about the bar? I want to sit here drinking alone in the dark for a while."

"Yeah, all right, Freep. Help yourself. It's all on the house tonight. And take what you want, too. Just be sure to leave the door propped open when you leave. Some of the regulars here will want a few stiff ones tonight."
