'Holiday tree' quickly pulled from governor's mansion
Associated Press
ATLANTA - When it comes to Christmas, political correctness apparently only lasts about a half-hour in Gov. Sonny Perdue's office.
A press release sent by Perdue's office to members of the media Friday afternoon announced plans for a "holiday tree" lighting ceremony at the governor's mansion.
Exactly 30 minutes later, a second release blamed the wording on "a politically correct staff brain-freeze."
"It is, in fact, a Christmas tree," said the second release. "The staffer responsible can be contacted at P.O. Box 432, Anchorage, Alaska, 99501."
This year, religious conservatives, including the Rev. Jerry Falwell, have objected to the use of the term "holiday tree," saying it seeks to minimize the Christian origins of Christmas.
Falwell, founder of Liberty University and the defunct Moral Majority, has e-mailed 500,000 followers to urge support for the "Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign" aimed at public officials, schools and retailers.
Spokesman Dan McLagan said there's no doubt where Perdue, a Republican, comes down on the issue.
"When the governor learns that one of my staffers even inadvertently used the words 'holiday tree,' I am probably going to be in trouble," said McLagan. "It does go to show the pervasiveness of the media influence that that word would even occur to someone to use in that context."
Go Sonny and put the PC fools in their place.
Look how the AP blames the Religious right...grrrrrrrrr.
Here's the funny part:
"It is, in fact, a Christmas tree," said the second release. "The staffer responsible can be contacted at P.O. Box 432, Anchorage, Alaska, 99501." LOL
When people say to me "happy holidays" I reply, "It is OK to wish me a Merry Christmas, I won't sue." It is so very disarming and always worth a good laugh.
One co-worker said "but I am Jewish". I said, "yeah, but I am not, so happy Hannukah." Still laughter.
Try it yourself.
LOL, I love a sense of humor.
Kudos to Sonny and his staff.
I always get a good laugh when I wish people a Merry Kwanzaa.
lol, it seems that the Southern holiday season has not forgotten the reason!
Good for our great governor, Sonny
Gone are the days when we used the term chairman, and "madam chairman". They have been replaced by a piece of furniture.
The PC crowd tries to pretend Christmas is not Christmas and turn it into a shopping spree. How similar all this is to Soviet Russia.
I had a customer service rep in Kohl's go on and on about a co-worker who complained that nobody liked her. The rep tells me all about our Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ and how he wasn't liked either. She asks me then, what makes this woman think she is better than our Lord?
However, when I went to leave she says, "Happy Holidays". I stopped, looked her straight in the eye and said, "Merry Christmas". She was so shocked that she dropped her gum out of her mouth.
What was the point of going on and on about Jesus and then saying Happy Holidays?
I am laughing now because you speak of silly things.
I'm going to send the knucklehead a Christmas card:
Dear Staffer: Its a Christmas tree you fool! Merry Christmas!
P.S. Sonny said to say hi.......
This thread gave me the best chuckle of the day and I really needed it!
The secularists are winning. Don't you see, it is becoming second nature, even among Christians, to say "happy holidays". YOU and I and all of us must stop this, one person at a time. And if we enrage someone on the way, even better.
ping
As the backlash continues this year, and the PC walls come a crumbling down .... way to go, Gov !
Merry Christmas :)
LOL!!! Oh my...they sold out the staffer. Well, can't say the staffer didn't deserve it.
Yea but you're not going to use that Alaska address. That was a joke you idiot (as I slap my forehead) LOL!
Yeah, right? They seem to forget the fact that 85% of Americans (no doubt of varying spiritual levels) celebrate Christmas for what it is. Christ's birthday.
