Why America Should Know Hugo Chavez

The best example of Chavez as a sleazy “turnaround when politically correct” leader is his stance on Iraq. While he now occasionally condemns Saddam Hussein’s regime, a few years ago he preferred to act cozy in Baghdad. During talks with the former Iraqi dictator to discuss the oil economy in 2000, he had elaborate photo ops taking a ride in Saddam’s Mercedes and hanging out at the Hussein palaces. “Imagine, he took me on a ride in Baghdad while he was driving the car,” he sweetly told the press.

At the rally last week, Chavez named off his political role models as the protestors screamed, “Fascist Bush! You are the communist!” He somehow managed to include Martin Luther King, Jr. and Thomas Jefferson in the same positive list as Fidel Castro. “Today Mr. Bush is the loser,” he continued, explaining that opening up free trade among the Americas would only help the United States and hurt South American nations.

Chavez shouldn’t blame other countries for producing poverty when a majority of Venezuelans still live poorly. Even after the new trade agreement, there is no way that Bush, Fox and others should be at fault for all of Venezuela’s poverty. And Mr. Chavez, how do you explain that under your “end corruption” presidency that you are probably the most corrupt South American politician at this time?
