A teenage boy died of blood poisoning after getting his lip pierced, an inquest was told yesterday.
Daniel Hindle, 17, an A-level student from Richmond, Sheffield, had a ring put through his lip and his girlfriend had her eyebrow pierced.
His mother, Christine Anderson, broke down in the witness box as she told the inquest in Sheffield that the first she knew about the piercing was when her son walked through the door.
"My first reaction was shock. 'Eurgh,' I thought. I suppose it's a normal motherly reaction."
Mrs Anderson said she called a doctor when he developed a fever nearly two weeks later. The locum took two minutes to examine Daniel, before prescribing medicine for an upset stomach.
Two days later Daniel started hallucinating and was rushed to hospital. Mrs Anderson said her son had been born with a weak heart but was living a normal life.
She said she had talked to a doctor at the Northern General Hospital and added: "I thought it was something to do with his heart, but he told me Daniel had septicaemia.
"It was then that I told him about the lip piercing. He seemed to agree that that would be the cause."
Naomi Storey, 21, Daniel's girlfriend, told the jury that her piercing, at Body Poppers, had also become infected.
The piercer, Emma Thompson, denied breaking hygiene rules. The inquest continues.

Hanging out with "older women" will get you in trouble every time....even an A Level student. That said lightly - this is socialized medicine at it's best and pray we never have to depend upon it for our children.

This kid just picked the wrong place to get his piercing.
Well, if they can have sex and abortions without parental notification/consent, then what's a piercing through the lip?
Blech. I think they look rather stupid, but it's a free country.
That just ruined my lunch! I have yet to see a good justification from anyone about what beauty is added to the human body by tattoos or piercings. Most babble about "individuality" and run out of words.....
Ummm, actually, it's not. It was a lot more free in the past. It's going the wrong way.
It all just proves how immature these kids are and that guidance of a parent or some mature adult is most certainly needed to help them on their path to adulthood. All kids will do crazy things if left on their own. I think if they asked then the parent might not be happy with their choice but at least the parent could do some research and try to steer them to a safe place. Very sad world and the kids are suffering terribly.

It's a shame there are so many remarks to the negative. No matter what...a 17 year old boy is dead because of something stupid he did. We were all 17 years old at one time and did stupid things. This was a tad extreme perhaps and he should have asked permission from his parents that is true. He didn't and now he is dead. Gone forever. What heartbreak and what a price to pay for something that was just not important at all. God bless his soul and I pray his mother has the strength to carry on after losing a part of her heart.
yep. Yet I bet he thinks he is cool and I guess some people are shocked by it and sometimes I think this is why they do it. I would not be shocked. Just sad to think someone would maime themselves for life like that. He must have an awfully low image of himself and that alone is sad.
