DEMOCRATS are getting cold feet about starting an abortion fight over Supreme Court nominee Sam Alito because if they do, they could lose big-time in the court of public opinion. Alito backed a law requiring a woman to notify her husband before an abortion. The Supreme Court disagreed.
But Americans by a nearly 3-1 majority agree with Alito, so the fact that he might shift the court could be a plus.
In all, 72 percent of Americans favor spousal-notification laws, according to a 2003 Gallup Poll, and an equally lopsided margin thinks teens under 18 should have to tell their parents before an abortion.
Most Americans want legal abortion, but they want it more restricted. If the abortion debate centers on whether to tell parents or a husband, it's a loser for pro-choice Dems.
So some Dems want to blast Alito on machine guns he opposed a federal law barring private ownership.
But it was a narrow ruling, and the truth is, Dems seem privately resigned that Alito will be confirmed.

We can always hope!
"It was amazing how Bush worked so hard to avoid a fight with the Dems in making a Supreme Court pick, and when Bush finally comes around and appoints a paper trail conservative, all the Democratic threats seem to disappear. I guess rats do not like the light of day being shined on them."
That's exactly what Limbaugh, et al, have been saying.
`Dems are Wary of Alito Fight'.
How do we know they are `wary'?
Because Reid, Kennedy, Leahy, Pelosi and others have been seen with flowers sticking out of their back pockets.
And why do they have flowers stuck in their back pockets?
Because when the `dust settles' they know they will be wearing their asses for hats.
Oddly, it worked out. It made the criticism about appointing a woman disappear. I don't think that was the plan.
1. They do not want to set a precedence with their filibustering. It would ruin their future in nominating judges should they regain the White House.
2. The people are leaning more and more to "it's wrong to kill a baby" no matter what the age.
If Roe vs Wade does get overturned and it goes back to the states, they can blame the Republicans.
Confirming Alito is a win win for the Dems despite the rhetoric.
Rove was away. I believe it was Card.
There were some fake polls that came out the other saying that Alito was bad because he would reverse Roe, and the American people did not want that. I am not sure what the American people want, but this shows me that internal numbers are making the democrats edgy.
Not true. The best poll I have ever seen for keeping abortion legal is about 50%.
I am starting to believe Miers was a smart move on Bush's part. He threw her to the dogs to pave the way for a real conservative. I bet she and Bush are laughing about it even as we speak.
Regarding post #11: I think this memo is the reason why Harry Reid went out of his way to close the senate session and DIVERT the news AWAY from the Alito nomination...They (demorats) have got to be feeling heat from NARAL, Ralph Neas & Comp, the NAGS at NOW, etc. Its like a pack of rabid dogs and we need a strong dog catcher to reign these idiots in. Bush and Co ought to be out in front of the press cameras each and every day, offering interviews on Alito, having every Republican Senator praise this nomination to the hilt...KEEP THIS ON THE FRONT BURNER! The BIG STORY IS JUDGES...perhaps Christmas will even bring a Stevens retirement? or Ginsburg?
They fight so they can be reelected by their mostly moonbat constituents in their protected districts. It's mostly posturing.
I'd love to see Stevens and/or Ginsberg resign.
Great post from loony-land. This is one of my favorite parts: "Bush and the GOP have been majorly bloodied by Miers, Libby, Iraq, and gas prices." BWAHAHAHA! Ms. Miers has the gratitude of the right for gracefully withdrawing; Libby has the support of the right against the trumped-up charges fomented by that liar Wilson; Iraq is going well, having just adopted their constitution; and gas prices are dropping. That's the moonbats for you: always wrong but never in doubt.
I don't think Roe vs. Wade is in jeopardy quite yet.
the leftys will never allow those two to resign. the only way they will leave the court is by assuming room temperature.
They'd hate to have Bush pick their replacement but he's going to be around until January of 2009.
Someone remind me again why we had to have Miers?
Had to be a woman? None of the candidates wanted the post?
It looks like, just like tapping together Dorothy's Ruby Slippers we could have had Alito all along.
Aside from doing a lot of meaningless name dropping, the leftist idiot in your post is just quoting Dem talking points. Entertaining, as always, for the moonbat input, but not much substance.
Which, as we know, perfectly describes the Dem Party.
