Vaccine may target obesity in the future: researchers

When babies receive shots against diseases like polio and measles, their vaccinations may in the future include protection against getting fat, according to researchers.

Infection by certain pathogens triggers rapid increases in fatty tissue in animals, Nikhil Dhurnadha told the annual meeting of NAASO, the Obesity Society, in this western Canadian city.

At the same time, the discovery that many more obese people than normal-weight people have been exposed to a certain virus suggests a link between obesity and viral infection.

Vindicated! Vindicated, vindicated, vindicated.

I just wish I could see those doctors' smug faces when this plays out.

The vaccine isn't going to do any good at all if the obese people continue to consume more calories than they burn. It's quite simple, really. If you burn 2,000 calories a day, and consume 4,000 calories a day, you are going to gain weight. Period.

As a fat person, I don't exactly welcome the news. I think we try to cure too many problems with drugs. Who knows what the side effects are going to be.

No thank you...I'll keep doing what I do, which is try to eat right and exercise. I still think that's the best way.

Instead of wasting their time and resources on developing a vaccine for obesity, how about some new treatments or cures for diseases like AIDS and cancer? I'd welcome a cure for diabetes (I and II).

Just try the South Beach Diet and stick to it. I'm down 45 lbs in 21 weeks (4 sizes) and I thought I was too old to ever lose another pound. I've got 25 lbs. to go, but I know I will get there. Then I'll treat myself to a potato.

SB is easy (after the first 2 weeks, which is designed to break your dependence on sugar) and you can eat out all you want, as long as you make sensible choices. No weighing, measuring, etc. AND NO VACCINES! LOL.

My excercise has been limited to an ever increasing activity level. I'll go back to the gym as winter arrives. The food plan is excellent for diabetics and pre-diabetics because it focuses on the glycemic index of foods and instructs you to choose foods with a low glycemic index.

The book cost me $10 bucks at Sam's Club, and there are no other costs and no meetings associated with it. I feel just terrific. I can't wait to go to my next physical and knock the socks off of my doctor. Hopefully he'll let me off of my blood pressure meds.

You guys just don't get it.

Not all obesity is caused by overeating, and the smug insistance that it must be is no service to the advance of knowledge.

Most people -- and virtually all doctors -- assume that anyone overweight lacks discipline around the knife and fork or consumes 4,000 calories. When people who are fat and do not overeat report that they don't overeat, it is assumed that they are lying.

This article, which I have been waiting for and predicting for a long time, is the first clear scientific support I have seen for the truth.

Sigh. I guess that even when they do identify bacterial and viral causes of obesity among people who consume a below-normal amount of calories are identified, and people are being cured of obesity through medical intervention, the thin and smug will continue to insist that the cause is a moral failing on the part of the people who suffer from these medical problems.

My wife is a 5'4" Japanese woman, and I eat less than she does. (This is the cue for the smug to accuse me of lying.) I knew, and have known, that there must be some as-yet-undiscovered cause of the "epidemic" of obesity.

When an entire nation spends billions of dollars and a similar amount of time and energy trying to get skinny, and just keeps getting fatter, something is out of whack.

I suspect that you didn't click the link and read the entire article.

They are not discussing drugs to cure obesity, but vaccines to cure microbial causes of obesity.

Vaccines in effect are drugs.
