Smoking Ban Meeting Planned For Tuesday

POSTED: 7:04 pm CDT September 19, 2005 UPDATED: 1:35 pm CDT September 20, 2005

MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Common Council is preparing to clear the air on the city's smoking ban Tuesday night.

Many of those who have rallied to repeal the smoking ban are expected to attend Tuesday night's common council meeting.

Three smoking-related things are on the agenda including an outright appeal of the ban, an amendment to allow businesses to apply for a hardship exemption and a proposal for a citywide referendum.

"It doesn't look like there's enough votes to repeal the ban," said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. "And at this point, it doesn't look like there are enough votes for the other options as well. At this point, it looks like the smoking ban will remain in place."

Spokesmen for the group that supports repealing the smoking ban said they have eight of the 11 votes needed for repeal.

The anti-smoker gnatizies have one problem and one prblem only - they are selfish crybabies and expect everything to be done their way and when it doesn't they going crying to mommy, in the form of big brother government, to take care of their demands.

Smoking bans have nothing to do with the health of workers or anyone else and everything to do with small people finding a means of making themselves out to be bigger than they are.

It is selfishness and insecurity, plain and simple.

Click on the "eminent domain" link at the top of FR. You'll find a ton of information regarding the Kelo decision. If you support smoking bans, then you need to be intellectually consistent and support that decision.

I don;t like smokers and people who smoke and throw their cigarettes on the road while driving.

This statement gave you away. You could care less about peoples health. You are citing the same old excuses. Bad for your health, gives me asthma, blah blah blah. But they seemed to be the seconary excuses. You just don't like smoking period. Thats the whole problem in a nutshell. I can't stand for people to crack gum around me. It rubs my nerves raw. Its not bad for you but it drives me crazy and thats what smokers do to you. If someone is cracking gum in front of me, I just move or put up with it. I am not going to come up with a bunch of excuses to ban gum. In all fairness to you, you have most likely been fed the myths so long that you honestly believe them by now. I have asked this question of dozens of nonsmokers and have yet to get an answer. Why didn't smoking bother people in the 50's 60's and 70's? Why are there less smokers now but more cancer and heart disease? And please spare me the one about second hand smoke. And as a non smoker, does that mean you are going to live forever or are you going to die like us nasty smokers?

These are the folks behind this whole mess, as well as the increased minimum wage in Madison and the forced 9 days of PAID sick leave for people that work 12 hours a week. I'm pretty sure new zoning rules are to follow shortly, which will put the final nail in the coffin of business in Madison.

Put on your hip-waders before you go in there, LOL!

Well, we lost the repeal by ONE vote. The Progressive Dane pukes win again.

Does that really surprise you? They are going to do what they want regardless. Even if they got it on a referendum and lost, they would ignore the results. Happened in my town. Their excuse for ignoring the results: Not enough people turned out to vote so the results were meaningless. Oh by the way, the "officials" who chose to ignore the will of the people were all Democrats.

Think of something that would cripple your ability to do you job, then imagine the government foisting that upon you and closing your lab.

I innovate, there is nothing in this world that can stop me from doing this. BTW, probably you may be using some electronic device in which either my innovation or my solutions were used since 2001 :)

So, I do not care who regulates what. I make my money at the end of the day with my brains. I found America amazing. If you have brains and a solid motivation nothing can stop you.

I have come to this country in June of 2005. It has been around three months. I started my job as a Senior Scientist and now in three months I am the Lead Scientist for a group of 40 bright engineers/scientists(13 Indian, 15 Chinese, 5 Russians, 4 European and 3 American). All the time, products and innovations rapidly change in the industry I work (nanometer VLSI technology aka nanotechnology). But that does not stop us. We learn to transform and re-innovate.

That is how we learn to transform based on the circumstances. If it were not for this, companies like Intel and AMD would have bitten dust by now. Oh, btw, I work in one of these two companies' R&D labs :)

Regarding the smoker I fired, yes she is a big time slacker. I gave her a lot of chances however she failed to innovate. Instead of taking a dozen smoking breaks and then calling in sick because she suffers from smoking related complications, she should have quit smoking and should have contributed better.

Your selfishness is showing again, and also your obvious bigotry about people that use tobacco products. About the only thing regarding your posts that can be excused is your failure to grasp idiomatic American English.

When a business loses 70% of it's customer base due to the selfishness of those such as yourself who insist on using government to meet your needs, there is nothing to "innovate" to get that base back.

Since you are a "scientist" and work for someone else, you have no concept of what it is like to be an entrepeneur and pour your life into operating a business, therefore there is no expectation of you understanding just what these people are going through. Having worked with business owners throughout this country trying to fight these bans, I do know what they are going through - I have seen their bottom lines.

You should be proud of yourself for firing the slacker lab assistant - you should hang your head in shame over your contribution to the job losses of many people who are not slackers, but are out of work because of the selfishness of you and your kind.

Don't you get it? Since the business owner isn't catering to HIM then it isn't a valid use of resources. Let's at least hope that he is open to learning the meaning of private property and the foundation of our individual liberty.

His posts on this subject have already shown that will not happen, his only understanding of individual liberty is that of himself, all others must bow to that first.

I thought you became a little sane based on your earlier post. But obviously, the Nicotine did not seem to have kicked in enough!!!!

Yes, I am selfish. I am selfish because I need to compete....I am hungry like any other Indian and Chinese Scientist who love USA. That is why we innovate.

In our kind of business unit (which is R&D), innovation is our business. Our business expertise is measured in the quantity and quality of our innovations, our expertise in organizing the business unit and managing it, our knowledge of analyzing the financial viability of a product line, the risk we might face with our business decisions based on our innovations and the associated rewards.

As per my company and my Director (a Belgian but a patriotic naturalized American), he thinks I have a smart way to manage my business unit (fyi...each business unit in itself is an enterprise...in massive technology companies like LU,INTC,AMD, QCOM etc). So if I am managing, analyzing my business unit's financial risks and rewards of my enterprise, I am sure he knows I am a better enterpreneur. That is the reason why I am a Lead Scientist today with in three months and at 27 years. No need for a "Nicotine addict" to tell lecture me about my enterpreneural skills!!!

Since you are a "scientist" and work for someone else

By the way, Scientists do not work for companies. Companies consult us, respect our feedback and pay us for the technology solutions we provide. Therefore a good scientist never works for someone else. He/she is consulted by companies. That is why our job titles are usually "Distingushed Member of consulting staff" "Member of consulting staff etc.

How about spending a little bit of your typing effort on answering my question. Do you support the Kelo decision?

I'm also going to ask another follow up question: Have you ever read the US Constitution?

Sounds like she forgot that we're all foreigners here, eh?
:O)

I work for myself outdoors, so I smoke everywhere. I set off a good forest fire last week. I hope they don't get any DNA off my dead filter.

Whoops! Time to take my smoke break...

It's like, you know, whether to sell the whole kelo or break it up into ounces... Honest.
